LEC 3 Minute Update - July 27, 2023

Mornin’, all! Greetings from the Mentor Public Library in Mentor Ohio! I wanted to thank all of the unit leaders who’ve made the effort to join us in-person or virtually at our Fall Recruitment and Fundraising Trainings!

And speaking of recruitment, did I mention what all we have to boost your info tables this fall!? Folks, we’ve got everything you need to stay hip and jiggy with the trends of today’s youngyin’s, drawing them into your recruitment tables. Take me for example! I’m rocking some dope shades, representing my true colors with these silicone circles, keeping my keys close thanks to this carabiner with a tight clip, and the real piéce de résistance: the gold bracelet that wraps your wrist and keeps the inner-fiddler in you happy and focused. (You might even say it slaps!) My fit’s a real 10, and everyone else in your neighborhood should have the same one as well: with plenty of beascout.org references printed all over it!

Last year, the Council tracked over 4,000 pounds of food donated to local charities, and we want to see this grow even more this year!

And now, another note about the ACE program. This is a reimbursement system for families to be able to offer more activities for their children. Scouting’s national membership fees and SOME activities DO qualify for reimbursement through ACE. You and your Scouting families should apply here to see if you’re eligible. The FEST is also August 6 at the Center for Pastoral Leadership in Wickliffe. The Catholic Committee on Scouting is looking for Scouts and Scouters to help with Cub Scout activities and take part in the mass procession and communion, as well as volunteers to man the Scouting station for any passers-by looking to get more information! It’s a great way to recruit, and the Catholic Committee will even make sure you get some food and decent parking out the mix! Volunteers are welcome for the whole day, or just a shift: all time given is appreciated! Contact Tony for more information.

Lastly, the St. George Trek is a chance for young people to discern their religious vocation. The next trek is in July 2024, and will take place at Philmont with other discerning youths. The Diocese of Cleveland offers two spaces for interested young people, and scholarships are available for those committed to attend. Any questions about this trek should be emailed to Jim Hickey.

In the world of Cub Scouts, family dens are here to stay! Last year, more than 2,000 Cub Scout packs took part in a pilot program where dens of kindergarten through fourth grade Cub Scouts were formed with boys and girls. All Cub Scout packs may now form family dens from Lions to Webelos. Fifth-grade Cub Scouts, aka Arrow of Lights, are to remain in gender-specific dens to prepare them for joining a gender-specific Scouts BSA troop. Learn more at this link.

Camp Gray in Beaumont is getting a facelift. The block wall upholding the flag pole in Camp Gray is getting redone, and you have the chance to leave a personalized legacy on the wall with an engraved block. First, the National Office slated June 14 of this year as the date in which all youth Scouts will move up a grade level. It varies some from year to year, and this year, it’s on June 14th! Oh, that’s a keeper! Speaking of boat decks, you’re invited to come look at a few this Saturday, courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard. They’re having an open house from 10-2 at their lakefront location in Cleveland, at 1055 E. 9th St. All ages are welcome to see the boats, maybe even a helicopter, and get to talk with Coast Guard recruiters about all there is to know in this branch of the service.

LEC 3 Minute Update - June 1, 2023

Mornin’, all! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s three minute update. I’m Jake Brown, coming to you from Nickel Plate Beach in Huron, where the water is cool, the sun is warm, and it’s a good day to be outside! I hope you got the chance to slow down and enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend, as well as take a moment to say thank you, in your own way, for those who gave all they had for our nation. It was really exciting to see Packs and Troops from Amherst, Grafton, Bay Village, Perry, and many, many other places across the Council participating in parades and festivities over the weekend. Kudos to you, Scouts, for representing the movement and our Nation in this way! 

Okay, in this week’s three minute update, we have: Training, Resources, and  Scouting in the Fall.

LEC is offering mobile rock wall training next week, Archery Level 1 Training this Saturday, and Range Safety Officer Training later, in July. Register now if these will be of benefit to you! 

Also, this is the last call for attendees at the first ever Council Unit Representative Training on Saturday, June 3rd. This is for Key 3 leaders from council-registered units, in addition to those who are curious to learn more about how volunteers and professionals jointly administer chartering a unit through the LEC. If you have any questions about this course, contact me! 

The Membership and Product Sales trainings this July will be a huge asset for all Packs, Troops, and Crews. Veterans with years of experience and novices with no idea how to organize a fundraiser will both get new information helpful to your unit’s cause. Join us in-person or virtually from any session! Attendance in the product sales training is non-committal, and you may attend if only to learn more about the sale, and see if it’s right for you. Register now! 

Now, do you all remember what I said about fall being around the corner? I know, I know: stop talking about it. But look, I want to help you be as prepared as possible for it, and that means one thing has to happen in every Pack, Troop, Crew, and Ship this summer: planning. I’m telling everyone this because it works: plan when your meetings will be for the next school year. Plan when and where the campouts will be. Plan for how much you’ll need to sell in popcorn and other things. 

I meant what I said last week about August 1st: if you can answer what you do, when you do it, and how much it costs by that time, you’ll be in great shape to welcome new families! 

Another pro-tip I have for you: plan WITH your families, not FOR your families. Allow and encourage everyone to attend your summer planning session. Ask them what they want to do, and plan to do it! This will increase their buy-in and participation in your events, and it will make it easier for you to welcome more adults into roles of leadership. Remember, plan WITH, not FOR! 

Speaking of planning, if you need printed materials, give-aways, or other things to help promote your Scouting program over the summer months, request these things by using the Membership Resources Request Form! It’s easy, and someone from our field services team will coordinate delivery of your materials once they’re ready. I’m telling everyone now: if you’re going to have handouts printed for your unit, DON’T! We are happy to offer this service to you!

LEC 3 Minute Update - May 25, 2023

Mornin’, all! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s three minute update. I’m Jake Brown, and I’m coming to you today from North Kingsville, Ohio. Home of Covered Bridge Pizza and Whippy Dip Ice Cream, this is a beautiful small town on Lake Erie to stop and watch the gulls fly by. 

  Okay, in this week’s three minute update, we have: Trials for Hope, Upcoming Training Opportunities, Cub Scout Outings, and membership resources. 

The organization Trials for Hope is in great need for assistance for sorting and labeling items (such as food, clothing, toiletries) that come in as donations. Saturdays are the preferred days for this. Sorting happens at 4321 Bridge Avenue in Cleveland. Canned food donations are also appreciated. Canned items need to have pop tops to open as they go to the homeless, who might not have the means to open cans.

In addition, note that the Council is also hosting its first ever Council-Registered Unit Representative Training on Saturday, June 3rd. We’re encouraging Key 3 leaders from council-registered units to attend, in addition to those who are curious to learn more about how volunteers and professionals jointly administer chartering a unit through the LEC. Folks, I just want to take the time to say thank you for bringing Scouting to your Scouts thus far this year. It may hurt to hear it out loud, but fall really is just around the corner. Now is the time to put plans in place, confirm calendars and budgets, and reach out to us to ask for help in the areas you need, such as scheduling school talks or join nights. 

If that feels daunting and you don’t know where to start in planning, answer these two questions: “How much does Scouting cost in your unit? When are you active with meetings and activities?” 

New recruits, and families continuing into next school year, need these details to ensure their commitment to your program. I ask of you today: set a goal that by August 1st, your Pack, Troop, or Crew can answer those two questions: “How much does Scouting cost here? When are you active?” 

Speaking of new recruits, did you know, the Lake Erie Council is here to print flyers, tri-folds, business cards, and other recruitment materials for YOU? In fact, we highly recommend requesting these materials before Memorial Day weekend so your unit can take full advantage of the publicity of being in your town’s local festivities. You can request resources online, and we will coordinate with you to get you what you need! 

And speaking of Memorial Day, our Unit Service Center and both Scout Shops will be closed this coming Monday. We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday, though!
