LEC 3 Minute Update - August 5, 2022

Hello everyone, and thanks for tuning into this week’s three minute update, brought to you from Times Square! Watching out for pickpockets and fresh wads of gum on the sidewalk is totally worth it! The bright lights and big city are the perfect place for this week’s three minute update.

This week we have: Scouting for Food, popcorn, adult applications, the revised Eagle Scout application, Cub Haunted, National Jamboree, Wood Badge, and the Firelands Stewards, along with this week’s fun fact!

But first, let’s talk about incident reports. Nobody likes them, but they exist to document three areas of concern 1) physical, meaning injury, illness, or damage, 2) policy violations, such as violations of the Scouter Code of Conduct or Youth Protection infractions, and 3) Near Misses, meaning that one of these things almost happened and could happen again. Registered volunteers and professional Scouters are required to submit reports whenever these things happen, per BSA’s membership standards.

As a reminder, instances of abuse or serious/fatal injury need to be reported immediately. In such cases, contact the Scout Executive immediately. In other, less serious cases, the report must be submitted within 24 hours of occurrence. Contact Member Care to help you walk through the reporting process.

 It isn’t too late to sign up for the 2023 National Jamboree! Any Scout 12 years or older is able to attend this assembly of youths to enjoy patch trading, bmx biking, and so much more! Questions go to Phil Williams, and the link to register is here!

Previous Firelands Stewards: you should now have received your mailed invitation to join us for this years’ stewards’ dinner, on September 12th. If you haven’t donated toward Firelands projects before but would like to, please register at this link. Questions go to Danny Thomas.

Online adult applications are now optional for your unit! If your unit would like to enable online applications to be submitted online, the Chartered Org Rep must log in to their my.scouting.org portal and enable the feature on the Unit Pin. Scouting for Food door hangers are officially somewhere between the Pacific Ocean and the Western-most point on I-80 in California! This to say, if you’re itching to get your door hangers for the Scouting for Food weekends, don’t fret! Michelle will be in touch with you as soon as they’re here!

The Scout-oriented popcorn training, previously scheduled for this Saturday, is cancelled due to lack of sign ups. Nevertheless, Scouts should sign up to sell popcorn this fall! Your unit can do so at this link!

Any troops interested in offering service hours toward this year’s Cub Haunted weekends should contact Grace! This is a great opportunity to not only have a lot of fun at camp, but also to showcase your Troop at the biggest Cub Scouting event we host each year! LEC 3 Minute Update - July 28, 2022

Hello everyone! And welcome to this week’s three minute update. Coming to you from Twinsburg, Ohio! Here’s a fun fact for you: Twinsburg was originally called Millsville, until twin brother settlers purchased land, then deemed it for public use, on the condition the name change to Twinsburg. LEC 3 Minute Update - July 21, 2022

Greetings! So, last week we had a technical glitch that prevented us from sharing the 3 minute update via email. So this week it’s a 6-minute update! Let’s take a look at some old news…

As we enter the final week of summer camp for Beaumont, the Ranger Staff would like to thank all of the Troops that completed service projects at camp this summer. The place looks and works even better now, thanks to your efforts!

Don’t forget about Rocket Day on August 13th, along with the Captains and Crushers Overnighters! Email Jim Vanderpool with any questions!

The Firelands Trading Post has special hours this week, in order to best accommodate the massive number of Cub Scouts attending camp this weekend! On Thursday, they’re open from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday will be 9:00 to 9:00, Saturday will be 9:30 to 7:00, and Sunday they’ll be open from 9:30 until Noon. Stop in and get a slushie, a hoodie, and all sorts of other goodies!

Do you not know who your unit’s popcorn kernel or fundraising chair is going to be yet? Well do that person a favor and register them….., er, no, I read that wrong, have them register the Unit for the upcoming fall sale! There’s a lot of important updates being sent to units by Trails’ End, and you won’t receive this information if your unit is not registered. The point of contact can always change later! And lastly, here’s a great big fun announcement to make! The Lake Erie Council is proud to present G.A.M.E.S. Training on November 12th at Lake Erie College. For those of you that know a thing about Scouting because you’ve seen a thing or two about Scouting, consider this to be the latest rendition of a University of Scouting or Baden Powell Institute-type of event. For those of you, like me, who never had to crank a car starter, this training is an all day opportunity to learn a lot more about Scoutings’ myriad of topics, from getting more information about what a den is, to learning about leave no trace principles, to cooking in the great outdoors, and even taking time to rethink how to be as focused on diversity and inclusion as you can at the unit level: this training will definitely have something in it for you! The best part is that each training will have a game-theme to it, meaning this won’t be a death-by-powerpoint day! No ma’am! This will be an interactive day of fun for adult Scouters to learn new skills while having a blast! There will also be a midway of information to learn from between sessions and during lunch! $25 adult participant fees will include program supplies, learning materials, and lunch, and $5 extra will cover babysitting for your future Scout. Why are there periods between the letters in G.A.M.E.S.? Because on that day, we will be Getting Adults More Expertise in Scouting! Man, I’m having fun just talking about this! LEC 3 Minute Update - July 14, 2022

Hello! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s 3 minute update. This week, we’re filming from our offices downtown, because I wore a green shirt today by accident, and that doesn’t let me travel on the Green Screen Express very well.

This week, we have: upcoming Cub Scout activities, BALOO and SM Basic Training, a Great Big Recruiting Opportunity, Scouting for Food, Stewards of Firelands Dinner, and this week’s fun fact!

This year’s Stewards of Firelands annual dinner will be Sept. 12th, from 6-9 pm. Attendees will be able to network with other folks who just love Firelands, and who wish to fund future projects to beautify and upgrade camp. Cub Scouts have plenty to do this summer, including campouts with the Lake Erie Captains and Crushers campouts’ in August, as well as Rocket Day! These events, along with September Webelos Woods’ and Cub Overnighters, Cub Haunted in October, Overnighters in November, and Holidays at Camp in December, are all on the Council calendar. So make a plan to attend these fun events now, and make sure your annual planning conference uses the Council calendar to help your Pack create a great year of fun and character building for your cubs! Scouting for Food is the best opportunity to do good service in your community AND let your community know your unit is active, alive, and ready to accept new recruits! This summer is still packed full of fun for our Cub Scouts! It's not too late to register for S'more Cub Adventures, as well as campouts with the Lake Erie Crushers and Captains, Rocket Day, Scouting for Food, and a Fall Cub Overnighter at Firelands September 10th. There are some changes coming to SBSA rank requirements. In the words of National, these "minor modifications" were made to bring the requirements more in line with the principles and ethics of Leave No Trace and the Outdoor Code. They go into effect on August 1st. Here is a link to see the newest requirement language.

LEC 3 Minute Update - June 30, 2022

And in this week’s update we have: non-unit Scouter registration, national fee increases, Scouting for Food, the National Catholic Committee on Scouting annual training conference, BALOO and SM Basic Trainings, and this week’s fun fact.

First, any Scouter who’s primary registration is not at the unit level, such as Commissioners, must renew their registration by July 31st. Everyone who is registered at the non-unit level must renew their registrations by completing this registration link. If your non-unit registration is your primary registration, you can either mail payment to the Unit Service Center, or you can pay electronically by following this link. The National Committee on Catholic Scouting is hosting its annual training conference at Philmont from July 17ththru 23rd. Participants will learn the best methods to deliver Scouting through the lens of the catechism, among learning other intersectionalities between Catholicism and Scouting. Hey, and speaking of things being expensive, I’m about to share what I know is your favorite news of the week: National BSA is raising registration fees again. Let’s break this down. Explorers, Sea Scouts, and all adults: your fees remain the same.

Brand new youth members: the New Member fee remains the same.

Youth Members: your fee increases $3, from $72 to $75 for the year.

Scout Life subscriptions: these also increased $3, from $12 to $15.

Charter Fees: The one-time annual charter processing fee raised from $75 to $100.

All of these increases take effect on August 1st. If you would like an updated cost sheet matrix or need any clarifications, please email lecmembercare@scouting.org.

If you’d like to reminisce about the good old days when Scout Life magazine was $5, and the registration fee was $12, and gas was 50 cents a gallon and the Cuyahoga caught fire and the school was uphill both ways Nixon to had to resign: we encourage you to do that on your front porch with friends and a pitcher of iced tea in this beautiful summer sun.

Now, please note that if you have any new Scouts to add to your unit’s roster, it will most definitely be cheaper to do that in July than it will be in August. So send in those apps now! And do remember to update your unit’s budget with these latest fees so you’re prepared come recharter, when most of us will see them take effect.

LEC 3 Minute Update - June 10, 2022

Hello, I’m Jake Brown and this 3 minute update is coming to you from Way Up North in Anchorage, Alaska! It’s a whopping 55 degrees here today, which is a lot higher than the average high this time of year. The chance of rain is low, the chance of moose and bear sighting is high, and, oh, I see Paula Swiner over there! Hey Paula!! And, she’s on vacation so she’s ignoring me. I don’t blame her.

In this week’s update, we have Celebration of Scouting, Wood Badge, Fall Popcorn/Recruitment Kickoffs, Scouting for Food, Scout Shop updates, the last call to sign up for National Jamboree, S’More Cub Scout Adventures, and a reminder about Family Free Fishing Weekend.

Folks, this happens sometimes, and I apologize for it: I was wrong. The four fall kickoffs, where we will distribute popcorn, Scout’s Own, and recruitment resources to units, will each begin at 7:00 p.m., NOT 6:00 p.m. On the bright side, that’ll hopefully expand your Pack adults’ abilities to be present! The dates are still June 23rd, July 21stand 26th, and August 3rd. Register your unit now by finding these on the Council calendar! All unit leaders from each Pack, Troop, and Crew, are welcome and encouraged to attend. The FEST is a Catholic gathering and celebration, hosted in Willowick at the Diocese of Cleveland’s Center for Pastoral Leadership. And also note, even if you are not Catholic, that this event generates an amazing amount of exposure for your unit and for Scouting as a whole. Crowds here usually top 10,000 people.

LEC 3 Minute Update - June 2, 2022

Mornin,' all! And thanks for tuning into the 3 minute update this week. I'm back out at Beaumont today with my fellow colleagues, and we are helping do what we can to get summer camp ready to begin! You heard that right, folks: we are getting camp ready for summer camp! I was going to put a segment about the future into this week's update, but seeing as how it already feels like the future has come and gone past me, let's settle for what we've got upcoming here, and that is:

The Religious Relationships Committee is seeking other interested parties in joining their currently small but very mighty team! This committee is open to representatives from all faiths interested in collaborating as Scouters to promote religious awards amongst all Scouts in the Lake Erie Council. Speaking of foxes and other random fauna of the wilderness, Wood Badge is a supreme training opportunity for Scouters to sharpen their outdoor skills, as well as their powers of persuasion in a group, among other things. Scouting for Food is a non-perishable food drive that any and all Scouts and friends of Scouts can and should participate in. Any unit from the Lake Erie Council can register at this link, and will be sent information and door hangers accordingly as we get closer to the Scouting for Food Weekends, August 20th and 27th. Good news, The Lake Erie Council now has yard signs available for placing at the sites of Eagle Service Projects (if local ordinances permit such signs). They can be signed out from the Unit Service Center, in addition to each of the Service Areas. Contact Member Care or your Service Area Advancement committee to sign out (pun intended!) these signs.

And lastly, please remember folks, that there will be fall recruitment and popcorn kickoffs at Firelands, Beaumont, and the Unit Service Center this summer!
