LEC 3 Minute Update - August 10, 2023

Mornin’, all! There’s a lot going on in the world today, and this update is brought to you from Hawaii in solidarity with everyone on the island of Maui. Fires tore through the island beginning Tuesday, and rescue efforts are still underway. If anyone is interested in learning more about how they can help residents of Maui, you can start by following this link

Okay folks: in this week’s three minute update we have: service updates, training updates, and popcorn updates!

But first, a special thanks to the 146 unit leaders who attended our recruitment and product sale trainings over the last month. It’s been busy, and a lot of great information was shared between leaders about ACE funding, recruitment best practices, and the in’s and out’s of popcorn! If you were unable to attend these sessions, or want a re-cap, you can go to lecbsa.org/membership-resources to find the recording of our last session.

If you need recruitment materials, remember to use our Membership Resources Request form to request flyers, giveaway boxes, school talks, and anything else you need for your recruitment efforts this fall!

The show and sell popcorn order deadline is August 28th. If you have any questions about how much or what kind to order, reach out to Heather McMillan. Orders must be placed through the Trails’ End portal. If your unit has yet to register for the popcorn sale, you can do so at this link

All: sign up for Scouting for Food at this link. Contact Michelle if you have any questions about how to participate in this amazing service project! Last year, the Council tracked over 4,000 pounds of food donated to local charities, and we want to see this grow even more this year!

ODNR is seeking Scouts to help clean up the shores and lands of Geneva State Park the weekend of October 3rd. In return, Scouts can camp on the beach! Check out this link for more information, and reach out to Jim Vanderpool for questions.

Ohio’s ACE program is something every Scouting family should be aware of! Learn more about potential Scouting (and other after-school activities’) fee reimbursements you may be eligible for by going to lecbsa.org/ace

Those needing BALOO training and Scoutmaster Basic Training can also register here: courses are scheduled for September and October. You can contact me with your questions!

The Lake Erie Council is proud to bring back in-person trainings for your positions! You can register now and send me any questions. Do note, there was an error previously on the registration: this is open to all leaders seeking training! You can also tell me if you’re interested in being a trainer for these courses.

Speaking of trainings, there will be a lifeguard training at Firelands on September 10th. The cost is free, and comes with a stipulation that you’re okay being on our list of folks to call and help staff future Scouting activities. You have to be at least 15 to take the training, and if you’d like to renew your certification, you still have to demonstrate your skills and pass the written test. Questions go to Jess Weaver

The Lake Erie Council is also proud to host a boating exploration day at Firelands on September 9th. This is a free event for the first 15 youth for each boat type, and participation at this event will count toward your Spirit of America certification. Questions go to Jess

Also in October: Cub Haunted registration is now open! Those looking to attend can sign up now! Troop members interested in helping at Cub Haunted can contact Jess.

We’re hosting another rock wall training August 31st from 6-9 at the Unit Service Center. Register here, and email Mike with questions.

Lastly, folks, know that the Cleveland Scout Shop has some swingin’ deals for you! Through October 29th, you can save 10% off uniform bottoms when you purchase a top!

And that’s a wrap for this week’s three-minute update! Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you! I’ll see you next week, take care!
