3-minute Update

LEC 3 Minute Update - August 3, 2023

Mornin’, all! I’m on top of the world! Or, really, just on top of terminal tower. It’s a fun way to spend the day and see some killer views of Cleveland! If you’re interested in purchasing tickets for this excursion, you can follow this link

Alrighty, in this week’s three minute update we have: recruitment trainings, a BALOO update, Scouting for Food, upcoming activities, popcorn updates, ACE updates, and this week’s fun fact!

First, this coming Wednesday, August 9th, is our last live option to get all the info you need to know about recruitment and fundraising this fall! This zoom meeting will begin at 6:30 sharp. Register here to receive the zoom link, and let Michelle Cali know if you have any questions!

Additionally, use our Membership Resources Request form to request flyers, giveaway boxes, school talks, and anything else you need for your recruitment efforts this fall.

Additionally, the deadline for ordering Show and Sell popcorn orders is August 28th. If you have any questions about how much or what kind to order, reach out to Heather McMillan. Orders must be placed through the Trails’ End portal. If your unit has yet to register for the popcorn sale, you can do so at this link

Scouts! You can still register for our Fishing Derby, Rocket Day, Lake Erie Crushers, and the Lake County Captains overnighter. Sign up now and check the council calendar for further information!

All: sign up for Scouting for Food at this link. Contact Michelle if you have any questions about how to participate in this amazing service project! Last year, the Council tracked over 4,000 pounds of food donated to local charities, and we want to see this grow even more this year!

Another note about the ACE program. This is a reimbursement system for families to be able to offer more activities for their children. Scouting’s national membership fees and SOME activities DO qualify for reimbursement through ACE. You and your Scouting families should apply here to see if you’re eligible. Information about what does and doesn’t qualify is getting updated very frequently. To see the latest on ACE-eligible activities and fees, check out lecbsa.org/ace. Email Mike your questions.

Rangemaster training is upcoming this Sunday at Firelands from 9-5. Email Julia Hearne your questions.

Those needing BALOO training and Scoutmaster Basic Training can also register here: courses are scheduled for September and October. You can contact me with your questions!

Additionally, the Lake Erie Council is proud to bring back in-person trainings for your positions! You can register now and send Jake any questions. Do note, there was an error previously on the registration: this is open to all leaders seeking training! You can also tell Jake if you’re interested in being a trainer for these courses.

Also in October: Cub Haunted registration is now open! Those looking to attend can sign up now! Troop members interested in helping at Cub Haunted can contact Jess.

Now, for this week’s fun fact: what did the walleye say to the carp at the haberdasherie? You look so so-fish-ticated in that suit!

Oh, and speaking of Lake Erie fish, there’s an amazing service opportunity for Scouts on the weekend of October 3rd. ODNR is seeking Scouts to help clean up the shores and lands of Geneva State Park. In return, Scouts can camp on the beach! Check out this link for more information, and reach out to Jim Vanderpool for questions. Cost is $3.00 per participant, and that is for the commemorative patch.

The FEST is also August 6 at the Center for Pastoral Leadership in Wickliffe. The Catholic Committee on Scouting is looking for Scouts and Scouters to help with Cub Scout activities and take part in the mass procession and communion, as well as volunteers to man the Scouting station for any passers-by looking to get more information! It’s a great way to recruit, and the Catholic Committee will even make sure you get some food and decent parking out the mix! Volunteers are welcome for the whole day, or just a shift: all time given is appreciated! Contact Tony for more information.

Lastly, the St. George Trek is a chance for young people to discern their religious vocation. The next trek is in July 2024, and will take place at Philmont with other discerning youths. The Diocese of Cleveland offers two spaces for interested young people, and scholarships are available for those committed to attend. Any questions about this trek should be emailed to Jim Hickey

And that’s a wrap for this week’s three-minute update! Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you! I’ll see you next week, take care!

LEC 3 Minute Update - July 27, 2023

Mornin’, all! Greetings from the Mentor Public Library in Mentor Ohio! I wanted to thank all of the unit leaders who’ve made the effort to join us in-person or virtually at our Fall Recruitment and Fundraising Trainings!

And speaking of recruitment, did I mention what all we have to boost your info tables this fall!? Folks, we’ve got everything you need to stay hip and jiggy with the trends of today’s youngyin’s, drawing them into your recruitment tables. Take me for example! I’m rocking some dope shades, representing my true colors with these silicone circles, keeping my keys close thanks to this carabiner with a tight clip, and the real piéce de résistance: the gold bracelet that wraps your wrist and keeps the inner-fiddler in you happy and focused. (You might even say it slaps!) My fit’s a real 10, and everyone else in your neighborhood should have the same one as well: with plenty of beascout.org references printed all over it!

So if you haven’t been able to come by and get your box of swag at our trainings, contact your Unit Serving Executive to get the goods!  In fact, for any recruitment resources or assistance you need, check out lecbsa.org/membership-resources to let us know how we can help you make the most out of this fall. And stay tuned next week, because there will be more opportunities to join us virtually and get the low-down on recruitment and fundraising!

Alrighty, in the rest of this week’s three minute update we have: activities updates, training updates, service updates, and notes regarding Ohio’s ACE program.

But first, Cub Scouts, you can still register for our Fishing Derby, Rocket Day, Lake Erie Crushers, Lake County Captains, and a Silver Screen Overnighter. Sign up now and check the council calendar for further information!

Special Shoutout to Packs thirty-thirty-one, six seventy-seven and five hundred, as well as troops six fifty-two, two twenty-three, and one twenty-four B for signing up for Scouting for food! Units can request door hangers and patches at this link. Contact Michelle if you have any questions about how to participate in this amazing fundraiser! Mornin’, all! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s three minute update. I’m Jake Brown, coming to you from quaint and quiet Gates Mills. Named after the man who owned the mill in town, Gates Mills is a land of white picket fences and beautiful scenery. It’s so nice, Bob Feller lived out his retirement there. If you’re looking for a scenic drive, I highly recommend it!

Okay, in this week’s three minute update, we have: Notes from National, Scouting for Food, Scout Shop Updates, the Annual Ride for Scouting, Camp Gray Improvements at Beaumont Scout Reservation, summer training opportunities, a note about the upcoming fall product sale, and Non-unit registration renewal.

Folks, you’ve heard me underscore the need to plan this summer, and as a reminder, there are some trainings coming up in July that will help you and your unit excel in planning your recruitment and fundraising efforts this fall. Sessions are scattered conveniently across the Council, in addition to being broadcast over Zoom. Register now for these courses, and send Mike Evano any questions or concerns you have.

And now, folks, here’s a fun fact for you this week: Why couldn’t the sailors play cards? Because the captain was standing on the deck!!

Oh, that’s a keeper! Speaking of boat decks, you’re invited to come look at a few this Saturday, courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard. They’re having an open house from 10-2 at their lakefront location in Cleveland, at 1055 E. 9th St. All ages are welcome to see the boats, maybe even a helicopter, and get to talk with Coast Guard recruiters about all there is to know in this branch of the service.

LEC 3 Minute Update - June 1, 2023

Mornin’, all! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s three minute update. I’m Jake Brown, coming to you from Nickel Plate Beach in Huron, where the water is cool, the sun is warm, and it’s a good day to be outside! I hope you got the chance to slow down and enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend, as well as take a moment to say thank you, in your own way, for those who gave all they had for our nation. It was really exciting to see Packs and Troops from Amherst, Grafton, Bay Village, Perry, and many, many other places across the Council participating in parades and festivities over the weekend. Kudos to you, Scouts, for representing the movement and our Nation in this way!

Okay, in this week’s three minute update, we have: Training, Resources, and  Scouting in the Fall.

LEC is offering mobile rock wall training next week, Archery Level 1 Training this Saturday, and Range Safety Officer Training later, in July. Register now if these will be of benefit to you!

Also, this is the last call for attendees at the first ever Council Unit Representative Training on Saturday, June 3rd. This is for Key 3 leaders from council-registered units, in addition to those who are curious to learn more about how volunteers and professionals jointly administer chartering a unit through the LEC. If you have any questions about this course, contact me

The Membership and Product Sales trainings this July will be a huge asset for all Packs, Troops, and Crews. Veterans with years of experience and novices with no idea how to organize a fundraiser will both get new information helpful to your unit’s cause. Join us in-person or virtually from any session! Attendance in the product sales training is non-committal, and you may attend if only to learn more about the sale, and see if it’s right for you. Register now

Now, do you all remember what I said about fall being around the corner? I know, I know: stop talking about it. But look, I want to help you be as prepared as possible for it, and that means one thing has to happen in every Pack, Troop, Crew, and Ship this summer: planning. I’m telling everyone this because it works: plan when your meetings will be for the next school year. Plan when and where the campouts will be. Plan for how much you’ll need to sell in popcorn and other things.

I meant what I said last week about August 1st: if you can answer what you do, when you do it, and how much it costs by that time, you’ll be in great shape to welcome new families!

Another pro-tip I have for you: plan WITH your families, not FOR your families. Allow and encourage everyone to attend your summer planning session. Ask them what they want to do, and plan to do it! This will increase their buy-in and participation in your events, and it will make it easier for you to welcome more adults into roles of leadership. Remember, plan WITH, not FOR!

Speaking of planning, if you need printed materials, give-aways, or other things to help promote your Scouting program over the summer months, request these things by using the Membership Resources Request Form! It’s easy, and someone from our field services team will coordinate delivery of your materials once they’re ready. I’m telling everyone now: if you’re going to have handouts printed for your unit, DON’T! We are happy to offer this service to you!

Cub Scouts: register now for S’More Cub Adventures the Crushers’ Campouts are only weeks away! Register now to take advantage of the best weather Ohio has to offer for Scouting, at some truly beautiful properties! S’More Cub Adventures is a family-friendly single-day or overnight camping experience focused on earning some of the adventure pins for your den level, in addition to doing the fun stuff camp has to offer like BB’s, climbing, and boating! Send Jess Weaver your questions.

And with that, that’s a wrap for this week’s three minute update! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! See ya next week!
