In community service news, Scouting for Food allows Scouts to leave pre-printed door hangers in their community and return the following Saturday to collect non-perishable food donations for the food bank of the unit’s choosing. Units can request door hangers and patches for participation at this link. While this can be done any time of year, we highly encourage folks to participate this August. Send Michelle your questions.

In the world of Cub Scout activities, it’s not too late to register for the July session of S’more Cub adventures. We also have a Fishing Derby, Rocket Day, Lake Erie Crushers, Lake County Captains, and a Silver Screen Overnighter on the calendar for August. Sign up now, and check the council calendar for further information!

The Annual Ride for Scouting is August 20th, and is a great opportunity to give back to Scouting while enjoying a scenic ride through Ashtabula County on your motorcycle. Register here, and send your questions to Jason Setser.

Named after the man who owned the mill in town, Gates Mills is a land of white picket fences and beautiful scenery. It’s so nice, Bob Feller lived out his retirement there. Folks, you’ve heard me underscore the need to plan this summer, and as a reminder, there are some trainings coming up in July that will help you and your unit excel in planning your recruitment and fundraising efforts this fall. Sessions are scattered conveniently across the Council, in addition to being broadcast over Zoom. Register now for these courses, and send Mike Evano any questions or concerns you have.

Additionally, The upcoming fall product sale, which incorporates Scout’s Own and Trail’s End products, already has updates and news coming out for this fall. Unit Leaders should register for the sale at this link in order to be fully in the know. Questions go to Mike Evano.

The Annual Ride for Scouting is upcoming August 20th. Riders will convene and conclude their 80-mile day on the beautiful roads of Ashtabula County at Debonne Vineyards in Madison. Anyone who enjoys a beautiful day on their motorcycle is encouraged to attend. More information is available on our website, and fees include a food voucher and kickstand puck. Cub Scouts: register now for S’More Cub Adventures! This Cub scout specific program at Firelands offers a family-friendly single-day or overnight camping experience focused on earning some of the adventure pins for your den level, in addition to doing the fun stuff camp has to offer like BB’s, climbing, and boating! The Lake Erie Crushers and Lake County Captains also have overnighters this August: register now!

Camp Gray in Beaumont is getting a facelift. The block wall upholding the flag pole in Camp Gray is getting redone, and you have the chance to leave a personalized legacy on the wall with an engraved block. Those interested in a block should go to this link to submit their message and pay the appropriate fees. Questions should go to Terri Andrews or Jeff Olree.

The Cleveland Scout Shop has a sale on Thorlos Socks: buy 2 or more pairs and get 25% off. The Firelands Scout Shop has summer hours in effect: they’re open Friday from 6-8 and Saturday from 10-2.

Lastly, if you are registered as a unit commissioner, assistant service area commissioner, or service area commissioner, as well as scouter reserve or college scouter reserve at the council level, or a nova counselor or supernova mentor: your registration will end on July 31, unless you renew. First, the National Office slated June 14 of this year as the date in which all youth Scouts will move up a grade level. It varies some from year to year, and this year, it’s on June 14th! Make sure your unit rosters reflect this change appropriately, and send Member Care your questions regarding this matter.

Oh, that’s a keeper! Speaking of boat decks, you’re invited to come look at a few this Saturday, courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard. They’re having an open house from 10-2 at their lakefront location in Cleveland, at 1055 E. 9th St. All ages are welcome to see the boats, maybe even a helicopter, and get to talk with Coast Guard recruiters about all there is to know in this branch of the service.

LEC 3 Minute Update - June 1, 2023

Mornin’, all! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s three minute update. I’m Jake Brown, coming to you from Nickel Plate Beach in Huron, where the water is cool, the sun is warm, and it’s a good day to be outside! I hope you got the chance to slow down and enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend, as well as take a moment to say thank you, in your own way, for those who gave all they had for our nation. It was really exciting to see Packs and Troops from Amherst, Grafton, Bay Village, Perry, and many, many other places across the Council participating in parades and festivities over the weekend. Kudos to you, Scouts, for representing the movement and our Nation in this way! 

Okay, in this week’s three minute update, we have: Training, Resources, and  Scouting in the Fall.

LEC is offering mobile rock wall training next week, Archery Level 1 Training this Saturday, and Range Safety Officer Training later, in July. Register now if these will be of benefit to you! 

Also, this is the last call for attendees at the first ever Council Unit Representative Training on Saturday, June 3rd. This is for Key 3 leaders from council-registered units, in addition to those who are curious to learn more about how volunteers and professionals jointly administer chartering a unit through the LEC. If you have any questions about this course, contact me! 

The Membership and Product Sales trainings this July will be a huge asset for all Packs, Troops, and Crews. Veterans with years of experience and novices with no idea how to organize a fundraiser will both get new information helpful to your unit’s cause. Join us in-person or virtually from any session! Attendance in the product sales training is non-committal, and you may attend if only to learn more about the sale, and see if it’s right for you. Register now! 

Now, do you all remember what I said about fall being around the corner? I know, I know: stop talking about it. But look, I want to help you be as prepared as possible for it, and that means one thing has to happen in every Pack, Troop, Crew, and Ship this summer: planning. I’m telling everyone this because it works: plan when your meetings will be for the next school year. Plan when and where the campouts will be. Plan for how much you’ll need to sell in popcorn and other things. 

I meant what I said last week about August 1st: if you can answer what you do, when you do it, and how much it costs by that time, you’ll be in great shape to welcome new families! 

Another pro-tip I have for you: plan WITH your families, not FOR your families. Allow and encourage everyone to attend your summer planning session. Ask them what they want to do, and plan to do it! This will increase their buy-in and participation in your events, and it will make it easier for you to welcome more adults into roles of leadership. Remember, plan WITH, not FOR! 

Speaking of planning, if you need printed materials, give-aways, or other things to help promote your Scouting program over the summer months, request these things by using the Membership Resources Request Form! It’s easy, and someone from our field services team will coordinate delivery of your materials once they’re ready. I’m telling everyone now: if you’re going to have handouts printed for your unit, DON’T! We are happy to offer this service to you!

The organization Trials for Hope is in great need for assistance for sorting and labeling items (such as food, clothing, toiletries) that come in as donations. Saturdays are the preferred days for this. Sorting happens at 4321 Bridge Avenue in Cleveland. Canned food donations are also appreciated. Canned items need to have pop tops to open as they go to the homeless, who might not have the means to open cans.

Folks, I just want to take the time to say thank you for bringing Scouting to your Scouts thus far this year. It may hurt to hear it out loud, but fall really is just around the corner. Now is the time to put plans in place, confirm calendars and budgets, and reach out to us to ask for help in the areas you need, such as scheduling school talks or join nights. 

If that feels daunting and you don’t know where to start in planning, answer these two questions: “How much does Scouting cost in your unit? When are you active with meetings and activities?” 

New recruits, and families continuing into next school year, need these details to ensure their commitment to your program. I ask of you today: set a goal that by August 1st, your Pack, Troop, or Crew can answer those two questions: “How much does Scouting cost here? When are you active?” 

Speaking of new recruits, did you know, the Lake Erie Council is here to print flyers, tri-folds, business cards, and other recruitment materials for YOU? In fact, we highly recommend requesting these materials before Memorial Day weekend so your unit can take full advantage of the publicity of being in your town’s local festivities. You can request resources online, and we will coordinate with you to get you what you need! 

And speaking of Memorial Day, our Unit Service Center and both Scout Shops will be closed this coming Monday. We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday, though!

Also next weekend is EDGE training at Beaumont, where adult leaders can learn best practices for how to deliver trainings, inside and outside of Scouting! Come, join us and learn new skills!

LEC 3 Minute Update - April 20, 2023

Mornin’, all! And welcome to this week’s three minute update, I’m Jake Brown, coming to you from New York City. It feels like 2016 all over again, and all I have to say is LET’S GO CAVS!!! WOOO! Bring the Land home something beautiful!

Ok, here’s what’s new in this week’s three minute-update: Training updates, Cub Scout Activities, Camporees, service opportunities, and Summer Camp job openings, and an important upcoming webinar from National.

First, we need 24 more people in uniform to join us at the Cleveland Marathon to help cheer on runners and pass out water! Michelle and Tyler don’t want to be the only Scouters present, so sign up to help out now! Send Tyler Matthews your questions.

Other service opportunities for all units include Scouts Trash the Trash Day and Beaver Day at Firelands! Troops can Register for Beaver Day here, and contact Danny with your questions. Cub Packs MUST contact Danny BEFORE registering to make sure there are age-appropriate projects available.

Additionally, for adults 21 and over, Wilderness Engineers at Beaumont is upcoming this May. If you’re interested in helping, contact Chris and register here.

ILST and NYLT registrations are still open! Dave Sechnick and Jen Folkman can your questionsabout the courses. In addition, if your NYLT participants aren’t able to attend the May ILST session, but you want some helpful resources in providing the course at the unit level, also email Dave!

LEC is offering EDGE training, mobile rock wall training, and Archery Level 1 Training(Archery for Scouts BSA members) over the next few weeks. Check out the Council calendar, and register now!

In addition, note that the Council is also hosting its first ever Council-Registered Unit Representative Training on Saturday, June 3rd. This course will certify COR’s of units chartered to the Lake Erie Council (known as a CRUR). It is also open to Key 3 members of Council-Registered Units, so they can get a more detailed look at how the Council engages in chartering its units. Lastly, this course is also open to those interested in learning more about the concept of Council-Registered Units. If you have any questions about this course, contact me!

Also, LEC has Membership and Product Sales trainings on the calendar now! Join us in-person or virtually this July, and learn what changes from last year you need to know, in addition to the basics you may need. Register now!

Troop Camporees are only a couple weekends away! Beaumont’s Spring Camporee is the last weekend of April: contact Rob Burnham for questions. Firelands’ Camporee is in May, and Jess Weaver is your contact there.
