Attention all key three members, please check your application manager to approve all of the online applications that are starting to flood in! Also, ensure your unit pin is up to date. Any questions about these processes should be sent to member care.

LEC 3 Minute Update - September 1, 2022

Mornin’, all! I’m Jake Brown bringing you this week’s three minute update from Burton, Ohio, home of the Great Geauga County Fair! Not only is this fair the state’s oldest fair celebrating is bicentennial this year, but it’s also home to the Scout building, where Scouts have showcased their efforts within the county for generations. And truly folks, this is one of the best places to be on Earth, in my opinion. You can register for Scouts, pet a horse, and eat fried cheese on a stick all in the same hour! What a swingin’ deal!

Speakin’ of deals, let’s talk about everything you need to know this week to be the best Scouters you can be! We have updates on Wilderness Engineers weekend, Firelands Scout Shop updates, Fall Recruitment reminders, this week’s good scout shout-outs, Cub Activities, Scouts BSA Activities, Training updates, Certificate of Insurance Requests, YPT reminders, and this week’s pro tip.

There are Fall Camporees at at Firelands and Beaumont this autumn, so register today! Early Bird prices will be gone before you know it. Contact John Shrock with questions.

Cub Scouts, there are Webelos Woods, Cub Haunted Weekends, Fun Days and Overnighters, as well as Holidays at Camp weekends to look forward to! And remember Cub leaders, Cub Scouts is all about getting families the chance to do fun things together, like go to camp! So promote them all today and register now! Let Grace know if you have any questions and join us in our great outdoors!

Additionally, if your Troop is interested in service hours, email Grace to help staff the Cub Haunted weekends! We need ghouls, ghosts, and goblins galore!

The NYLT/Wood Badge alumni dinner on September 17th! Registration is live.

Now for this week’s good scout shout out: last weekend, Scouting for Food totals are at 2,835 pounds and 95 participants across the Council! Thank you to all who participated! That said, there are some units we know who haven’t uploaded their totals yet! So if you’re one of them, and we do know who you are, please check out this link to do so!

Training still abounds in plenty this fall, as there’s still time to register for: SM Basic, BALOO, Mobile Climbing Wall, Rangemaster, and G.A.M.E.S. training! All of these will add to your skillset and get you even more excited to be in Scouting as a leader!

Wilderness Engineers Weekend is at Beaumont September 23rd thru 25th. This is a chance to roll up your sleeves and get dirty, helping keep camp beautiful and safe into the winter months. Volunteers need to be 21 or older, and expertise with heavy equipment, chainsaw safety, or any trades is welcome! Even if you’re not skilled in those ways, but are able to use hand tools, there will be projects for you! Contact Chris Fortunato with questions.

Did you know? Certificates of Liability insurance are sometimes required by outside organizations for Scouts to host activities or events on their grounds. These riders are just one of the many services we provide as a Council. If your unit is asked for one, please email lecmembercare@scouting.org.

Also, a friendly reminder to all unit leaders: your Youth Protection training cannot lapse for longer than 30 days. If your YPT is expired for longer, your registration will be terminated, potentially putting your unit’s charter in jeopardy. DON’T WAIT! Renew your YPT before it expires!

Lastly, don’t forget to go to lecbsa.org/membership-resources to request yard signs, pamphlets, flyers, and a professional’s presence at join nights or school talks! Ask in the form and you shall receive, folks!

And that’s a wrap for this week’s 3 minute update! Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you! We’ll see you next time!

LEC 3 Minute Update - August 19, 2022

Mornin', all! And greetings from downtown Cleveland! I'm in the Flats by the Foundry, which is a beautifully redone rowing and fitness facility on the banks of the Cuyahoga. In fact, this facility was redone over the course of 2015 to the tune of about $14 million, transforming it from a decrepit turn-of-the-second-to-last century warehouse to a modern, state of the art facility with a lot of old school character.

It's also where the entire staff was on Wednesday, putting as much fun in fundraising as we could in our last development event! So for those of you still waiting on an email from me, I apologize!

But here we are, a beautiful day in this beautiful city, and this is everything you need to know this week!

Here we have Scout Shop Updates, Training Updates, Cub Haunted Reminders, a call to Scouts for volunteering, Scouting for Food, the NYLT/Wood Badge Annual Alumni Event, and a quick blurb about fall recruiting resources.

The Cleveland Scout Shop has 10% of uniform bottoms with purchase of the top until October 30th, so stop in today!

There are many upcoming Trainings this fall for adult leaders, including: mobile climbing wall training, BALOO, SM Basic, Rangemaster, and GAMES training. Check out the council calendar and continue learning how to make the program for the Scouts in your unit the best it can be!

The Wood Badge/NYLT annual alumni reunion is slated for September 17th on the Wyandot side of Firelands, from Noon to 3:00 p.m. Register now at this link to get together, reminisce, and try out the new games from the new syllabus! Questions should go to John Z.

Cub Scouts: it isn't too late to register for the fun fall we are offering you all! Cub Haunted in October is still taking registrants, as well as Scouts BSA volunteers for the event. Contact Grace with any questions.

Additionally, there's an overnighter in September you should consider because it'll be a Cosmic time! An out of this world experience!! That's September 9th thru 11th. Register now!

In reality though, folks, this is potentially the first chance any new recruits will have to experience a fun, outdoor, Scouting experience together as a family. It's a big deal, because new Scout families who go camping early on will stay in Scouting longer and become more dedicated. So don't miss out yourselves, and make sure to invite those new recruits along.

There's a volunteer opportunity this Saturday in Cleveland to help the Big Rock & Roll Run Saturday morning. It starts in the Inner Harbor and ends at Edgewater Park. Interested volunteers should email Mark.

To those of you Scouting for Food this weekend, thank you and good luck! We look forward to hearing how much food you gathered to report on in a couple of weeks! Additionally, if you want to Scout for Food later, we have the resources for your unit now, here, at the service center, so call member care to ask for some!

Lastly, if you need recruitment materials, or a council presence at your scheduled school talks or join nights, request them now using this form! No matter who or where you are, definitely use this form to request your resources, as it is the only way to guarantee our staff won't lose sight of your request in this busy fall season!

And folks, that's a wrap for this week's three minute update. Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you! We'll see you next week!

Lastly, everyone participating in Scouting for Food has until Monday to email me what address they’d like patches and door hangers delivered to, in addition to register for the drive at all! Registration is here, and you can email me with any questions.

And that’s a wrap for this week’s three minute update! Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you! I’ve gotta grab a sausage sandwich and hop on the Jennings!

LEC 3 Minute Update - August 5, 2022

Hello everyone, and thanks for tuning into this week’s three minute update, brought to you from Times Square! Watching out for pickpockets and fresh wads of gum on the sidewalk is totally worth it! The bright lights and big city are the perfect place for this week’s three minute update.

This week we have: Scouting for Food, popcorn, adult applications, the revised Eagle Scout application, Cub Haunted, National Jamboree, Wood Badge, and the Firelands Stewards, along with this week’s fun fact!

But first, let’s talk about incident reports. Nobody likes them, but they exist to document three areas of concern 1) physical, meaning injury, illness, or damage, 2) policy violations, such as violations of the Scouter Code of Conduct or Youth Protection infractions, and 3) Near Misses, meaning that one of these things almost happened and could happen again. Registered volunteers and professional Scouters are required to submit reports whenever these things happen, per BSA’s membership standards.

As a reminder, instances of abuse or serious/fatal injury need to be reported immediately. In such cases, contact the Scout Executive immediately. In other, less serious cases, the report must be submitted within 24 hours of occurrence. Contact Member Care to help you walk through the reporting process.

There’s a revised Eagle Scout Application out there, folks! You can find this latest version on our council website at this link: Eagle Scout — Lake Erie Council (lecbsa.org).

It isn’t too late to sign up for the 2023 National Jamboree! Any Scout 12 years or older is able to attend this assembly of youths to enjoy patch trading, bmx biking, and so much more! Questions go to Phil Williams, and the link to register is here!

Previous Firelands Stewards: you should now have received your mailed invitation to join us for this years’ stewards’ dinner, on September 12th. If you haven’t donated toward Firelands projects before but would like to, please register at this link. Questions go to Danny Thomas.

Online adult applications are now optional for your unit! If your unit would like to enable online applications to be submitted online, the Chartered Org Rep must log in to their my.scouting.org portal and enable the feature on the Unit Pin. Shoot questions for how to enable this feature over to member care!

Scouting for Food door hangers are officially somewhere between the Pacific Ocean and the Western-most point on I-80 in California! This to say, if you’re itching to get your door hangers for the Scouting for Food weekends, don’t fret! Michelle will be in touch with you as soon as they’re here!

And it’s still not too late to sign up for Scouting for Food! Do so at this link!

The Scout-oriented popcorn training, previously scheduled for this Saturday, is cancelled due to lack of sign ups. Nevertheless, Scouts should sign up to sell popcorn this fall! Your unit can do so at this link!

Any troops interested in offering service hours toward this year’s Cub Haunted weekends should contact Grace! This is a great opportunity to not only have a lot of fun at camp, but also to showcase your Troop at the biggest Cub Scouting event we host each year! Of course, Packs should register for Cub Haunted now at this link!

And lastly, Rocket Day is upcoming August 13th, next weekend! So if you haven’t signed up yet, please do so here.

LEC 3 Minute Update - July 21, 2022

Greetings! So, last week we had a technical glitch that prevented us from sharing the 3 minute update via email. So this week it’s a 6-minute update! Let’s take a look at some old news…

Folks, even though that was supposed to go out last week, I hope you still took all that news to heart! A couple things to add for this week are…

This week’s shout-out, this week’s pro tip, and a note about special hours at the Firelands store this week:

As we enter the final week of summer camp for Beaumont, the Ranger Staff would like to thank all of the Troops that completed service projects at camp this summer. The place looks and works even better now, thanks to your efforts!

Don’t forget about Rocket Day on August 13th, along with the Captains and Crushers Overnighters! Email Jim Vanderpool with any questions!

The Firelands Trading Post has special hours this week, in order to best accommodate the massive number of Cub Scouts attending camp this weekend! On Thursday, they’re open from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday will be 9:00 to 9:00, Saturday will be 9:30 to 7:00, and Sunday they’ll be open from 9:30 until Noon. Stop in and get a slushie, a hoodie, and all sorts of other goodies!

Do you not know who your unit’s popcorn kernel or fundraising chair is going to be yet? Well do that person a favor and register them….., er, no, I read that wrong, have them register the Unit for the upcoming fall sale! There’s a lot of important updates being sent to units by Trails’ End, and you won’t receive this information if your unit is not registered. The point of contact can always change later! Register now at this link.

And lastly, here’s a great big fun announcement to make! The Lake Erie Council is proud to present G.A.M.E.S. Training on November 12th at Lake Erie College. For those of you that know a thing about Scouting because you’ve seen a thing or two about Scouting, consider this to be the latest rendition of a University of Scouting or Baden Powell Institute-type of event. For those of you, like me, who never had to crank a car starter, this training is an all day opportunity to learn a lot more about Scoutings’ myriad of topics, from getting more information about what a den is, to learning about leave no trace principles, to cooking in the great outdoors, and even taking time to rethink how to be as focused on diversity and inclusion as you can at the unit level: this training will definitely have something in it for you! The best part is that each training will have a game-theme to it, meaning this won’t be a death-by-powerpoint day! No ma’am! This will be an interactive day of fun for adult Scouters to learn new skills while having a blast! There will also be a midway of information to learn from between sessions and during lunch! $25 adult participant fees will include program supplies, learning materials, and lunch, and $5 extra will cover babysitting for your future Scout. Why are there periods between the letters in G.A.M.E.S.? Because on that day, we will be Getting Adults More Expertise in Scouting! Man, I’m having fun just talking about this! Questions should go to event chair Sarah Williamson.

And that’s a wrap for these week’s 3 minute updates. Thanks for alls you dos, and thanks for beings yous. Until next time!

LEC 3 Minute Update - July 14, 2022

Hello! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s 3 minute update. This week, we’re filming from our offices downtown, because I wore a green shirt today by accident, and that doesn’t let me travel on the Green Screen Express very well.

This week, we have: upcoming Cub Scout activities, BALOO and SM Basic Training, a Great Big Recruiting Opportunity, Scouting for Food, Stewards of Firelands Dinner, and this week’s fun fact!

This year’s Stewards of Firelands annual dinner will be Sept. 12th, from 6-9 pm. Attendees will be able to network with other folks who just love Firelands, and who wish to fund future projects to beautify and upgrade camp. These events, along with September Webelos Woods’ and Cub Overnighters, Cub Haunted in October, Overnighters in November, and Holidays at Camp in December, are all on the Council calendar. So make a plan to attend these fun events now, and make sure your annual planning conference uses the Council calendar to help your Pack create a great year of fun and character building for your cubs! BALOO and SM Basic Training courses are upcoming in August and September, respectively, with other offerings in October. Check out the council calendar for details, and contact Pat O’Leary with questions.

In addition, door hangers and patches will be provided to your unit for the drive free of cost. Contact Michelle Cali with questions and register today!

Scouts and Scouters: the Catholic Committee on Scouting needs your help August 7th. Scouts are needed for general help keeping the line to the rock wall and the archery range running smoothly. If you’d like to sign up for a shift, please email Tony Dafonseca. The same is true for qualified rangemasters and mobile rock wall facilitators. AND, if you act now, I’ve got a SWINGIN’ Deal for you! Any unit who sends volunteers to the FEST will have their unit’s specific information on recruitment materials present for passers-by. So don’t delay! Sign up today!

And lastly, here’s this week’s fun fact:

If there’s something strange in your neighborhood: like a Troop that doesn’t have enough help with recruitment. Who you gonna call? Member Care!

If there’s something weird and it don’t look good: such as a Pack with questions about popcorn. Who you gonna call? Member Care!

If you’ve got a Scouting list running through your head: who can you call? Member Care!

If you’re all alone in Scouting, pick up the phone. And call: Member Care!

Member Care is here for you! Give them a call at 216-861-6060 extension zero. Again, that’s 216-861-6060 ext. 0. One more time for the folks in the back: 216-861-6060 ext. 0.

Also, email them at lecmembercare@scouting.org.

And that’s a wrap for this week’s three minute update! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We’ll see you next time!

LEC 3 Minute Update - July 8, 2022

Mornin’, all! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s three minute update. I’m Jake Brown, and we're at Beaumont Scout Reservation this week! Anthony graciously agreed to return as the Executive Producer for this week, which means I'm already getting yelled at for being longer than 3 minutes in this update! So this week we have:

Updates to SBSA rank requirements, Upcoming summer activities for Cub Scouts, National Jamboree, Non-Unit Registration Renewal Reminders, and Popcorn/Recruitment Kickoff Reminders.

It's not too late to register for the 2023 National Jamboree. Register now by clicking this link, and send your questions to Philip.Williams@scouting.org.

They go into effect on August 1st. Here is a link to see the newest requirement language.

Lastly, the Wolf'em Stick is the featured item of the Cleveland Scout Shop for the month of July. Allow me to try to put some drama behind this promo: "Never before has the likes of mankind seen such a useful and helpful camping tool. Fire will change from a novelty cooking concept to your primary camp cooking method with the new, improved, and ingenius: Wolf'em stick." And I want that company to know my voice here is copywritten, that'll be a hundred bucks, payable to the Lake Erie Council, to use this clip! Follow the Cleveland Scout Shop on Facebook or stop in today to learn all about it!

And that's a wrap for this week's three minute update! Thanks for all you do and thanks for being youu! We'll see you next time!
