LEC 3 Minute Update - June 30, 2022

Mornin’, all! And thanks for tuning in to this week’s three minute update. I’m Jake Brown, and this week’s update comes to you from Lakewood, Ohio! Here’s home to multiple Scouting units, along with Lakewood Park, the Beck Center of the Arts, and the Lakewood Civic Auditorium, among other cool spots worth seeing!

And in this week’s update we have: non-unit Scouter registration, national fee increases, Scouting for Food, the National Catholic Committee on Scouting annual training conference, BALOO and SM Basic Trainings, and this week’s fun fact.

First, any Scouter who’s primary registration is not at the unit level, such as Commissioners, must renew their registration by July 31st. Everyone who is registered at the non-unit level must renew their registrations by completing this registration link. If your non-unit registration is your primary registration, you can either mail payment to the Unit Service Center, or you can pay electronically by following this link. Please email sfgarner@gmail.com or David.madigan@scouting.org any questions.

The National Committee on Catholic Scouting is hosting its annual training conference at Philmont from July 17ththru 23rd. Participants will learn the best methods to deliver Scouting through the lens of the catechism, among learning other intersectionalities between Catholicism and Scouting. For questions or to register, please email NCCS@scouting.org.

Shoutout to Troop 41 and Packs 3236, 555, and 455 for being the first to register for this year’s Scouting for Food drive. If your unit would like to register, please do so at this link. If you think you’ve already registered and didn’t hear your unit number, email Michelle.Cali@scouting.org.

Cub Leaders: if you need Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (otherwise known as BALOO training), please register now at this link. The next course is August 26-28 at Beaumont. Send rebbecca.setty@gmail.com your questions.

Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters: if you need Scoutmaster Basic Training, please register for the next course at this link. It is September 9-11, and will be at Beaumont as well. Send phobsa@att.net your questions.

If you are interested in taking Rangemaster Training, please email Julia.Hearne@scouting.org . The next offering is scheduled for October, so if you’re aiming to take it sooner, please reach out.

Lastly, here’s this week’s fun fact: what’s the cost of a new chimney these days? Tough sayin’, but at minimum it’s through the roof!

Haha! Oh, what a knee-smacker!

Hey, and speaking of things being expensive, I’m about to share what I know is your favorite news of the week: National BSA is raising registration fees again. Let’s break this down. Explorers, Sea Scouts, and all adults: your fees remain the same.

Brand new youth members: the New Member fee remains the same.

Youth Members: your fee increases $3, from $72 to $75 for the year.

Scout Life subscriptions: these also increased $3, from $12 to $15.

Charter Fees: The one-time annual charter processing fee raised from $75 to $100.

All of these increases take effect on August 1st. If you would like an updated cost sheet matrix or need any clarifications, please email lecmembercare@scouting.org.

If you’d like to reminisce about the good old days when Scout Life magazine was $5, and the registration fee was $12, and gas was 50 cents a gallon and the Cuyahoga caught fire and the school was uphill both ways Nixon to had to resign: we encourage you to do that on your front porch with friends and a pitcher of iced tea in this beautiful summer sun.

Now, please note that if you have any new Scouts to add to your unit’s roster, it will most definitely be cheaper to do that in July than it will be in August. So send in those apps now! And do remember to update your unit’s budget with these latest fees so you’re prepared come recharter, when most of us will see them take effect.

And folks: that’s a wrap for this week’s 3 minute update. Our office and Scout shops will be closed Monday in observance of July 4th, as we hope yours is as well. We hope your weekend is long, fun, and safe for all. Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you!

LEC 3 Minute Update - June 10, 2022

Hello, I’m Jake Brown and this 3 minute update is coming to you from Way Up North in Anchorage, Alaska! It’s a whopping 55 degrees here today, which is a lot higher than the average high this time of year. The chance of rain is low, the chance of moose and bear sighting is high, and, oh, I see Paula Swiner over there! Hey Paula!! And, she’s on vacation so she’s ignoring me. I don’t blame her.

In this week’s update, we have Celebration of Scouting, Wood Badge, Fall Popcorn/Recruitment Kickoffs, Scouting for Food, Scout Shop updates, the last call to sign up for National Jamboree, S’More Cub Scout Adventures, and a reminder about Family Free Fishing Weekend.

The Celebration of Scouting is upcoming on June 24th, so please register now at this link! Send Paula.Swiner@scouting.org your questions, and she’ll get to them when she gets back from vacation.

Wood Badge is still a superb training opportunity, and spots are filling up fast! Make sure you register today for this course before you’re on a waiting list! Email joelbussman@gmail.com any questions you have.

It’s not too late to register for S’More Cub Adventures, so do so now at this link! Email Jess Weaver your questions.

Folks, this happens sometimes, and I apologize for it: I was wrong. The four fall kickoffs, where we will distribute popcorn, Scout’s Own, and recruitment resources to units, will each begin at 7:00 p.m., NOT 6:00 p.m. On the bright side, that’ll hopefully expand your Pack adults’ abilities to be present! The dates are still June 23rd, July 21stand 26th, and August 3rd. Register your unit now by finding these on the Council calendar! All unit leaders from each Pack, Troop, and Crew, are welcome and encouraged to attend. You can register here to attend the kickoff, and register here to register for the fall popcorn/Scout’s Own sale.

Here’s a friendly reminder from both Cleveland and Firelands Scout Shops to stop in and stock up on all your camping gear before heading out for your summer camping experiences this summer. They’ve got a lot of quality stuff, so check out their stock today! The Firelands store summer hours are now Fridays 5-9pm and Saturdays 10-4 through August.

Scouting for Food will take place August 20th and 27th. Please register your unit now for this service drive, and email Michelle.Cali@scouting.org with any questions you have.

If you’re planning on attending the 2023 National Jamboree, please register NOW if you haven’t done so already. The initial deposit is due, and the next payment for registrants is due July 31st. Register here, and contact Phil.Williams@scouting.org for more information.

The FEST is a Catholic gathering and celebration, hosted in Willowick at the Diocese of Cleveland’s Center for Pastoral Leadership. The Diocese’s Catholic Committee on Scouting is seeking volunteers to help assist in use of the mobile climbing wall and inflatable archery range the day of. If you’re interested in helping for a shift, please contact CleCatholicScouting@gmail.com. And also note, even if you are not Catholic, that this event generates an amazing amount of exposure for your unit and for Scouting as a whole. Crowds here usually top 10,000 people.

And folks, that’s a wrap for this week’s 3 minute update! I hope you are all enjoying summer so far, and are looking forward to your unit’s annual planning conference, which should be coming up soon! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you!

LEC 3 Minute Update - June 2, 2022

Mornin,' all! And thanks for tuning into the 3 minute update this week. I'm back out at Beaumont today with my fellow colleagues, and we are helping do what we can to get summer camp ready to begin! You heard that right, folks: we are getting camp ready for summer camp! I was going to put a segment about the future into this week's update, but seeing as how it already feels like the future has come and gone past me, let's settle for what we've got upcoming here, and that is:

Scout shop sale updates, the Silver Screen Overnighter, a note from the religious relationships committee, Scouting for Food, this week's fun fact, and a reminder from Anthony to check your email!

Thorlos socks are still 25% off at the Cleveland Scout Shop until June 19th if you buy 2 or more pairs. They're comfy, and now they're cheaper, so buy 'em!

Registration for the Silver Screen Overnighter on June 25th is open, check out this summer's blockbusters as a Pack or Troop! Email Jim.Vanderpool@scouting.org with questions, and sign up at this link!

The Religious Relationships Committee is seeking other interested parties in joining their currently small but very mighty team! This committee is open to representatives from all faiths interested in collaborating as Scouters to promote religious awards amongst all Scouts in the Lake Erie Council. Questions and interest should be sent to Jim Hickey at FourGreenfields70@gmail.com.

Calling all Cub Scouts: did you know there is a Cub Scout Summer Scholar Award that you can work on as a family? Ben Gorris is spearheading the charge to make as many summer scholars as possible: please email him at cubmasterpack3104@gmail.com for a list of requirements and to ask any questions.

And now for this week's fun fact: what do you call a fox with a carrot in each ear? Anything you want, it can't hear you!

Oh, that gets me every time!

Speaking of foxes and other random fauna of the wilderness, Wood Badge is a supreme training opportunity for Scouters to sharpen their outdoor skills, as well as their powers of persuasion in a group, among other things. There's still time to register! Please do so at this link. And contact joelbussman@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Anthony Dworning, camp director of this beautiful Beaumont Scout Reservation, will be emailing you shortly if you are a leader coming to join us here this summer. So watch that inbox with eyes of a hawk, because it'll have the invitation to your pre-camp leaders' meeting in it.

Scouting for Food is a non-perishable food drive that any and all Scouts and friends of Scouts can and should participate in. Any unit from the Lake Erie Council can register at this link, and will be sent information and door hangers accordingly as we get closer to the Scouting for Food Weekends, August 20th and 27th. Please contact Michelle.Cali@scouting.org with any questions.

Good news, The Lake Erie Council now has yard signs available for placing at the sites of Eagle Service Projects (if local ordinances permit such signs). They can be signed out from the Unit Service Center, in addition to each of the Service Areas. Contact Member Care or your Service Area Advancement committee to sign out (pun intended!) these signs.

And lastly, please remember folks, that there will be fall recruitment and popcorn kickoffs at Firelands, Beaumont, and the Unit Service Center this summer! All unit leaders should consider attending one of these four opportunities, which begin June 23rd. Register at this link, and send Jim.Vanderpool@scouting.org your questions.

And that's a wrap folks! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! I've got to get back to whatever hard labor Anthony saved just for me, so I'll see you next time.

LEC 3 Minute Update - May 26, 2022

Hello, I’m Jake Brown and this 3 minute update is coming to you from Berea, Ohio, The Grindstone City! A former manufacturing mecca for sandstone grinding wheels, Berea is home to Baldwin Wallace University, Berea Falls, and one of our Roundtables! Check out this place when you get the chance, it’s pretty neat!

In this week’s update, we have Eagle Scout Recognition Luncheon, Celebration of Scouting, Wood Badge, Fall Popcorn/Recruitment Kickoffs, Scouting for Food, Scout Shop updates, the Religious Relationships Committee, and the upcoming Summer Camp Leaders’ Meeting.

But first, a huge thank you to Pack and Troops 286 for assembling 99 medical kits to go to Ukraine over the last few weeks. These folks sent in some pictures of them making the kits, in addition to getting them to us so they can be sent to the front lines in Ukraine. With their donation, this brings the total number of kits donated through LEC to 300ish. If you’d still like to participate, please email me.

Registration for the Class of 2021 Eagle Scout Recognition Luncheon on June 5th is extended through May 30th. So please, Eagle Scouts, if you are planning on attending with your family and or your mentors, register them now! The link is here.

The Celebration of Scouting is also upcoming June 24th, so please register now at this link!

Wood Badge is a training course offered to adult Scouters and is meant to build upon the skills and knowledge gained through position specific training. It is available to all Scouters. In the words of one of last year’s participants, “I needed help communicating and persuading other parents in my Pack to become leaders, in order to make my Pack better. Wood badge gave me the tools to communicate this need, and the result was increased participation and help from my peers." There’s a zoom meeting to answer any questions prospective participants may have about the course coming up on June 1st at 7pm. Email joelbussman@gmail.com to get the zoom link.

Also on June 1st at 7pm, there will be a leaders’ meeting on zoom for those headed to Beaumont for summer camp this summer! Email Anthony.Dworning@scouting.org or Noah.Boksansky@scouting.org for the link. We look forward to seeing you there!

If you’d like to attend both zoom meetings but can’t please focus on attending the summer camp meeting, and shoot an email over to Joel letting him know you’re still interested in Wood Badge and would like to talk at a later time.

Did you know the Lake Erie Council has grown over the last two months? Yes, our membership growth is 1% over last year, and we’re on track to have more Scouts registered as of today over the same date last year, until at least July 31st. There the predictions get a little fuzzier. But this is great news, and deserves a round of applause for everyone who has added youths to their roster and kept them engaged in the program over the last year! This membership growth is of course only possible through the efforts of dedicated volunteers like yourselves, and for that we say thank you!

Speaking of membership, there will be four fall kickoffs to help get your units prepared for fall recruitment, along with the combined popcorn and Scout’s Own sale. They are June 23rd, July 21st and 26th, and August 3rd. Register your unit now by finding these on the Council calendar! All unit leaders from each Pack, Troop, and Crew, are welcome and encouraged to attend. You can register here.

The Cleveland Scout Shop will be open this Saturday from 10-2, and both Scout Shops and the Unit Service Center will be closed Monday for Memorial Day.

Scouting for Food will take place August 20th and 27th. The premise is simple: Scouts will canvass neighborhoods, hanging door hangers from folks’ doors, which asks them to leave non-perishable food out the following Saturday, August 27th. On that day, Scouts will return to the neighborhood, collect the food, and work with us to get it distributed. This is a great campaign to get other groups involved in, like your school or your Church! More details will come, but you can soon sign up at this link and any questions should go to Michelle.Cali@scouting.org.

Finally, folks, it’s been an especially hard week to watch the news. I know for me, sometimes it feels like it’s too much to process. However, I reflect on the good I see each of us put into Scouting. It is inspiring, and serves as a reminder that there are no impossible challenges. Keep leaving your world a little better than you found it. And with that, thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you. Until next week, take care.

LEC 3 Minute Update - May 19, 2022

Hey, everyone! The rain has stopped, and it’s prime time to chill out and enjoy a warm afternoon in the shade at Beaumont. I hope you’re having as relaxing an afternoon as I am, because this is nice. :)

This week we have, the Eagle Scout Luncheon, the annual Celebration of Scouting, S’More Cub Adventures, Med Kits for Ukraine, Beaver Day, Firelands and Cleveland Scout Shop Updates, Rangemaster Training, S’More Cub Adventures, this week’s pro tip, and this week’s fun fact.

Thorlos Socks are 25% off at the Cleveland Scout Shop May 23 through June 19. Stop in and take advantage of this, you guessed it, swingin’ deal!

Any Eagle Scouts, parents/guardians of Eagle Scouts, and other guests of Eagle Scouts from the class of 2021 who will be attending the Annual Eagle Scout Luncheon on June 5th. Register today at this link.

The Firelands Scout Store will be closed on Memorial Day Weekend. After Memorial Day, it will not be open again until June 3rd. Make sure to follow them on Facebook to see the new summer hours for the store!

Thank you to all who have donated to the Med Kit drive for Ukraine. Kits continue to be dropped off and shipped to Ukraine to help those on the front lines. If you’re interested in donating some kits and learning how to put them together, please email me.

The American Red Cross has asked for Scouters and Scouts 16 and over with parental consent, to participate in blood drives across Northeast Ohio by donating blood. Be sure to check blood donor eligibility requirements on redcrossblood.org, and find blood drives near you at the same website. There’s one coming up at St. Vincent’s Hospital on May 24th, and interested blood donors can register at this link. Remember, each blood donation saves 3 lives, and that’s pretty helpful!

Beaver Day is a chance for Scouts and Scouters to give cheerful service to camp by helping beautify the place up. Register your unit now for the June 4th Beaver Day at Firelands by emailing the Firelands Camp Hosts at firelandscamphosts@gmail.com.

The Annual Celebration of Scouting will be June 24th in Eastlake! Register now to enjoy a fun, celebratory evening of camaraderie and congratulation for our Silver Beaver, Unit Scouter, Division Award of Merit, and Venturing Leadership Award recipients. Register now at this link.

And now, it’s time for this week’s fun fact: what’s the easiest way for marshmallows and graham crackers to talk back and forth? Why, it’s using s’more-se code!

Ah, oh I love that one!

Hey and speaking of S’mores, it’s a great idea to sign up your family for S’more Cub Adventures at Firelands this summer! Sessions run June 23-26 and July 21-24. Register at this link, and contact jlweaver1998@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Rangemaster Training for the mobile archery and BB gun ranges will be at Firelands on June 4th, so sign up today and contact Julia.Hearne@scouting.org with any questions.

Lastly, here’s this week’s pro tip. Some of you may, or may not, have heard about the Unit Money Earning Application. It’s a simple form, and it’s required to turn in each time your unit fundraises using projects that aren’t popcorn or Scout’s Own. It’s produced by national, and part, well, most, actually, of our job as the local council is to ensure that everyone is following national rules. And there are rules about what can and cannot be done as fundraisers for Scouting units. Funny enough, you can find them on the back of this form.

I share this with you not because I like paperwork, nor because I have a deep and burning desire to control your unit’s fundraising plans. Believe me, I’m busy enough at the Council and with my own life. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone to fill out and submit this form 2 weeks prior to your non-Council fundraiser to lecmembercare@scouting.org.

If you find yourself deep in contemplation about why this form is required, please reflect on the following: without rules, we have no order. And without order, we have nothing.

If you still have questions, please contact me via email.

And that’s a wrap for this week’s 3 minute update! Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you! We’ll see you next week.

LEC 3 Minute Update - May 12, 2022

Hello, all! I’m happy to bring this three minute update to you from Independence, Ohio! Home of Top Golf and Denny’s, it’s a great place to visit.

This week, we have: Medical Kits, Beaver Day, Fall Kickoffs, S’more Cub Adventures, Wood Badge, the Eagle Scout Luncheon, Celebration of Scouting, Rangemaster and Mobile Climbing Wall Training, Fall Recruitment and Popcorn Kickoffs, and Water Fun Day.

But first, thanks to the 32 Units across the Council who participated in Trash the Trash Day. You all collected at least 64 bags of trash, although the total count isn’t yet uploaded to the website. If you haven’t done that yet, please do: but know the world is a more beautiful place thanks to your efforts. Well done, Scouts!

And here’s a last call for Water Fun Day at many YMCA locations across the council. Check out the calendar to finish registering, and contact Julia Hearne with questions.

Here’s a friendly reminder that medical kits are still being sent to Ukraine, and we are still accepting donations of such kits: email Jake Brown for more information.

Mobile Climbing Wall Training is on the calendar for May 17th and May 24th at the Unit Service Center in Cleveland. Email Noah Boksansky with questions and register today!

Cub Scout Rangemaster Training is on the books at Firelands for June 4th. A zoom training prior to these sessions is required for completion. Contact Julia Hearne with questions.

Wood Badge is the Council’s premiere training opportunity for Scouting leaders. Register now for the 2-weekend course in July and August, contact Joel Bussman with questions.

Beaver Day is a service opportunity to come out to camp with your unit and have Scouts and Scouters alike provide helpful and cheerful service to our camps. The next Beaver Day at Firelands is June 4th. Email firelandscamphosts@gmail.com to register!

All Eagle Scouts from the Class of 2021 should register now for the annual Eagle Scout Luncheon. Details are on the council calendar, contact Anna.Galipo@scouting.org with questions.

Here’s some fun facts about S’more Cub Adventures, happening at Firelands this June and July. One, Cubs will earn adventure pins for attending. Two, Cub Scouts who return for the second weekend will earn different adventures than the first weekend, while also receiving a discount for returning! Three, the duration of the Scout’s attendance depends entirely on each family’s preference. Folks can camp from Thursday thru Sunday each session, can come for just the day on Saturday, and any combination in between! It’s a great value and a great program, so register today! Contact jlweaver1998@gmail.com with any questions.

And lastly, folks, it is time. Fall membership and popcorn planning is right around the corner. We have 4 kickoffs on the council calendar: June 23rd and July 21st will be at Firelands, in concordance with S’more Cub Adventures, July 26th will be at Beaumont, and August 3rd will be at the Unit Service Center.

We encourage every unit, especially Packs, to schedule a planning conference with their committees and parents to iron out the next year’s calendar and budget for your unit. Having that ready for the kickoff meetings will be paramount, as we will explain how to utilize those tools in recruiting new members.

We also encourage each Pack to plan on inviting the public to at least one Pack activity per month, beginning in August, which can be both listed on your unit’s beascout.org pin, and also added to flyers.

We will be offering flyers and videos this fall again. Our membership resources tab on the council website will be updated next week, and will continue to be revamped throughout the summer to provide you with the latest and best materials and resources for recruitment.

All that to say, we will go over these resources, and help your pack build a plan at these kickoffs, for recruitment AND popcorn sales. Please register now on the council calendar, and reach out to Jim.Vanderpool@scouting.org with any questions.

And that’s a wrap for this week’s three minute update. Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We’ll see you next time.

Now it’s time for this week’s fun fact: why did the tectonic plates end their relationship? There was too much friction between them – they both agreed it was too rocky!!!

Hahahaha, gets me every time!

Hey, and speaking of rocks, there will be mobile climbing wall training at the Unit Service Center on May 17th and May 24th. The training will last about 3 hours, and is good for 2 years. So come get certified or recertified! Register at this link, contact Noah.Boksansky@scouting.org for details.

EDGE Training is still upcoming on May 15th and June 19th. It’s required for NYLT and Wood Badge staff, it’s a great idea if you’d like to be a trainer at a council training course, and it’s free! Contact steven.ott@ottesq.com with any questions. Register here! Lake Erie Council - EDGE Training 2022

And that’s a wrap for this week’s three minute update! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We’ll see you next week!

LEC 3 Minute Update - April 29, 2022

Mornin’, all! And welcome to this week’s rendition to the 3 minute update. This one’s brought to you from Mentor, Ohio, home of President Garfield and Headlands Beach State Park.

This week, we have a continued ask for medical kits to be sent to Ukraine, an update regarding the national multi-unit camping policy, trash the trash day, the Candyland Camporee, Tough Cubber, Youth Protection Training, Regional Pinewood Derby, EDGE training, Scout Swim Day, S’More Cub Adventures, and the Cub Scout Trailblazers weekend, and this week’s fun fact!

First, you may notice I’m on the air a little later than usual! While that may be par for the course, we are also happy to not have blown up your email inbox too much last night, especially since there is even further clarification regarding multi-unit camping. If you haven’t seen that email, please look for it or reach out to Member Care to get it forwarded to you.

Next, As there continues to be fighting in Ukraine, there continues to be a need for medical kits to be sent there. Please email me jacob.brown@scouting.org to get all the info about how to make the kits and the rest of the pertinent information. Thank you to everyone who has participated thus far.

Now, for today’s fun fact: what did the fella with the broken leg say to the kind person who offered to take his trash out?

“Now that’s an offer I can’t refuse.”

Hahaha, Oh, I love these puns.
