LEC 3 Minute Update – February 24, 2022,

Mornin', all! This is Jake Brown with the 3 minute update, and I'm not going to lie, this one's a little dense, folks, so be prepared.

While I'm physically being filmed at our office in Cleveland, my heart, as with everyone else, I assume, is in Ukraine this morning. More to come on that in just a moment, but let's now focus now on everything you need to know this week:

In order to run a BB or archery range, including the inflatable ranges we have available to rent from the Council, someone from your unit must be Rangemaster certified. There will be a training for Rangemaster and Archery level 1 training at Beaumont on April 2nd. Register online, and contact Julia. Hearne@scouting.org with any questions.

Training is a key component of successful delivery of the Scouting program. Should you have any questions about leader position specific training, how to get trained in your position, or who to contact about scheduling training for your position, please contact Michelle.Cali@scouting.org.

For outdoor, overnight outings in Cub Scouts, BALOO is a required training! And SM Basic Training is required at the troop level. The first of 3 rounds of those trainings offered this year are coming up in April: check the calendar and contact Rebecca Setty for BALOO questions (rebecca.setty@gmail.com) and Pat O'Leary with SM Basic questions (phobsa@att.net).

For youth leaders in the SBSA program, training in their positions is delivered in ILST. At this time, there is one ILST training session on the calendar, although we hope the interest is there to provide more! In any case, that training for youth will be held at Beaumont on May 21st. Register online! Contact Dave Sechnick (davesechnick@aol.com) with any questions. Please note ILST is a pre-requisite to attend NYLT.

Speaking of, NYLT is a premiere youth leadership training offered by Scouting for youth members in the SBSA program. This training will be held at Firelands June 12-17. Register online, and contact John Z (johnz3@zfolks.com) if you have any questions.

Following up with that, Wood Badge is the NYLT equivalent for adult leaders. Wood Badge is an opportunity to learn a little more about how to see your vision through to reality in Scouting and beyond, be it having more organization as a Troop, a more engaging program for your Pack, or a succession plan you can count on. Just a few examples of things Wood Badge can help you achieve. The course is at Firelands from July 29-31, and August 13-14. Register online and contact Joel Bussman (joelbussman@gmail.com) with questions.

Moving from training into just plain fun, there are some dates you should know about: April 22-24 is the Beaumont Spring Camporee. Webelos are welcome to join that Saturday and Sunday as well for the Webelos Spring Challenge. Contact Anthony.Dworning@scouting.org for more info, and sign up today!

May 6-7 is the Tough Cubber weekend at Firelands, followed by May 13-15 at Beaumont. Contact Rob Boehm for questions about this event (rboehmfam@gmail.com).

The Firelands Spring Camporee is May 13-15th.

And save the date for Cub Scout Summer Camping at Firelands this summer. Contact Jess Weaver (jlweaver1998@gmail.com) for more information about Cub Scout Summer Camping. More info to come on that!

Lastly, a friendly reminder that first payments for SBSA Summer Camp is arriving on April 1st: That's $100 for patrol cooking and $150 for dining hall food. Get those in to Noah.Boksansky@scouting.org as soon as you can before April 1st.

Finally, I want to leave you with the following message, paraphrased and translated from the website of the National Organization of Scouting in Ukraine:

"In these difficult times, we are reminded of the Scout values and principles of our Movement. Everything that is happening now is a difficult challenge, but each of us must accept it according to the Scout Law.

Be prudent, critical of information, and do not succumb to provocations. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Do not panic, and do not panic others. Do not incite hate speech on social media. Maintain devotion to Scout values, and remember that a Scout is friendly to all other Scouts. Remember that every Scout is a messenger of Peace, and remember the Ukrainian Scout Slogan: "Always be ready!"

And for all those who feel a certain despair, we would like to remind you of one simple truth from the founder of Scouting: "Dawn comes after the darkest moment of the night." We believe the current events are the same moment before dawn!"

If anyone watching this interested in offering their support to our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in Scouting, please email Michelle.Cali@scouting.org or Jacob.Brown@scouting.org, and we will do our best to coordinate communications and keep you abreast of any needs they may share as time continues.

That's a wrap for this week: thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We'll see you next week.

Lake Erie Council Camperships Available

The Lake Erie Council believes that no Scout should be denied access to the great programs due to financial need. A Scout is Thrifty, so we do encourage Scouts to show that they are working to earn their way to camp, a training, or activity, but sometimes it's not quite enough.

Through the generous donations from supporters of Scouting, we are proud to offer camperships and scholarships to Scouts* in need to attend summer camp, trainings, and High Adventure programs.

Campership applications require Unit Leader approval, so make sure you communicate with them that you will be requesting funds. We reach out to Unit Leaders prior to the Campership Committee's deliberation to get more information about Unit needs.

Camperships are awarded based upon need, full completion of the application, and timeliness. The committee will review the applications and set award amounts. Once approved, the Council will notify families, and apply the award amount to the Scout’s event registration.

*The Scout must be registered for the event that a request for a campership is for in order for the award amount to be matched and applied to the balance. The Scout must stay current with the payment schedule for the event. In the case that a campership award is greater than the balance due when approved, the difference will be refunded.

Check out each campership and scholarship application below:

LEC 3 Minute Update – February 10, 2022

Mornin, all! And welcome to this week's 3-minute update: this week we're in Las Vegas! It's going to be 76 and sunny today, which makes it a beautiful day to catch up on your scouting news! I'm Jake Brown after a really successful diet, lots of tanning, and in need of a haircut, and here's what you need to know this week.

We've got updates on Roundtable, Scout Shop Sales, Sap Camp, Camp Staff, the upcoming Catholic Scouters' retreat, and this week's recognition spotlight.

Roundtable continues tonight at 7PM at Beaumont Scout Reservation and next Thursday at a new location: Mayfield United Methodist Church in Chesterland. We will continue to have a virtual option on Wednesday and Thursday next week. Check the council calendar for the Zoom link.

The Cleveland Scout Shop has sales on select Eagle Scout Merchandise for 20% off. So fly like an eagle over here to downtown, because the sale's gone by February 19th.

Sap Camp is still coming March 5th. Join us to learn how to tap a tree  and what it takes to boil all the sap down to make our delicious Scout’s Own syrup. Don't get stuck with late registration fees: sign up today! Send Grace Prorok your questions.

Need a job this summer? Want to be able to walk to work each day? Can't get enough Beaumont meals in just one week? Then turn in your application to be a camp staff member today! They're available on our website, contact Anthony Dworning with questions.

Catholic Scouters are welcome to attend a retreat of reflection, hosted by the Diocese of Cleveland and their Committee on Catholic Scouting, on Feb 27th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Cleveland. A fee of $5 will be accepted at the door to cover the cost of lunch: please email clecatholicscouting@gmail.com with any questions and to RSVP.

And lastly, this week's recognition spotlight. These shoutouts come from Pack 68 in Lakewood, and are for the following Den Leaders: Wendy Cox, Kerissa McKay, Joan French, Mary Dodge, Matt Lucas, and Laura Westfield. All of you put your heart and soul in to making den meetings fun and active for the families in your dens, and we appreciate the extra effort it’s taken over the last couple years to continue making that possible. We also recognize that each of you holds more positions and responsibilities in the Pack than Den Leader, for which we are grateful.

You are all the heartbeat of the Scouting movement here and now, and on behalf of Pack 68, the Scouts in your dens, and the Lake Erie Council, we say thank you for all you, and thanks for being you.

That applies to everyone watching, of course, but remember that I can't spotlight anyone if you don't tell me about them! So nominate some folks for a shoutout by emailing me today! We'll get them recognized accordingly.

That's a wrap for this week! I’m Jake Brown and we'll see you next time!

LEC 3 Minute Update – February 3, 2022

Mornin', all! Thanks for tuning in to this week's three-minute update! I'm Jake Brown, and I send you greetings from Andover, Ohio! On the Ohio-Pennsylvania line in southern Ashtabula County, Andover is our gateway to the Pymatuning Reservoir and a great fish fry at Our Lady of Victory!

Here's all you need to know this week: Catholic Scouting update, Wear Your Uniform Day, Trash the Trash Day, Sap Camp, our recognition notice, and

Catholic Scouters are welcome to attend a retreat of reflection, hosted by the Diocese of Cleveland and their Committee on Catholic Scouting, on Feb 27th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Cleveland. A fee of $5 will be accepted at the door to cover the cost of lunch: please email clecatholicscouting@gmail.com to RSVP, and if you have any questions.

Sap Camp is March 5th! Send Grace.Prorok@scouting.org any questions you have, and register now!

Also register for the NYLT/Wood Badge Scholarship Breakfast on March 12th if you haven't done so. Contact Linda.Gray@scouting.org if you have any questions.

Roundtable will hold its normal in-person sessions next week at Firelands, Berea, and Beaumont. The following week hosts virtual roundtable, and the inaugural Mayfield Roundtable! Check the Council calendar for details.

For this week's note of gratitude, we turn now to our 2021 Class of Division Award of Merit recipients. The Division Award of Merit is an award given to those who render service of an outstanding nature at the program division level, including Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, etc.

This year's award recipient for Cub Scouting is: Jeff Olyear.

And in Scouts BSA, the recipients are: Bill Belew, Genny Espinoza, Desarae Kleckner, and Sherry Rasmusen. Please join us in congratulating these folks on a well-deserved award for their service to Scouting however you can!

Next week we will start highlighting achievements and folks deserving of accolade based upon entries submitted to me at jacob.brown@scouting.org. I'm really lookin' forward to speaking about some good news, I can't wait to hear what's going on out there!

And lastly, here is this week's training segment, brought to you by Wear Your Scouting Uniform Day. This year, as with every year, anyone, youth and adults are welcome and encouraged to wear their uniforms this coming Tuesday, February 8th. I understand this may leave some confusion about what to do, so allow me to break it down.

Anyone who has a uniform should wear their uniform as fully as their uniform can be worn on Tuesday, February 8th. The steps to completing participation in Wear Your Uniform Day are as follows:

Step 1. Get your uniform into your hands.

Step 2. Remove any non-clothing items from your uniform that may exist, including but not limited to a hanger.

Step 3. Prepare your uniform for placement on your body, including but not unlimited to unbuttoning your uniform.

Step 4. Place your uniform on the appropriate part of your body, including but not limited to your torso.

Step 5. Fasten your uniform to your body, including but not limited to re-buttoning your uniform.

Step 6. Do everything you were already going to do on Tuesday, February 8th, in your uniform.

Step 7. Take a picture of yourself in your uniform on Tuesday, and email it to Jacob.brown@scouting.org with a brief explanation of where you were and what you were doing.

Don't have a full uniform? Wear a Scouting-related shirt, jacket, belt, hat, or any combination thereof instead. Represent Scouting while wearing a less uniform uniform. After all, some uniform is better than no uniform when you're trying to be uniform.

Should you have any uniform questions about Wear Your Scouting Uniform day, please rewind this clip and watch it again to get the most uniform answers.

And that's a wrap for this week's 3 minute update! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We'll see you next week.

And lastly, let's make sure we continue this new year right with some volunteer recognition. This week, it's my honor and privilege to announce the names of the 2022 class of Silver Beaver recipients. This is the highest award a Council is able to bestow on a volunteer, and it highlights their exceptional service to Scouting here, in the LEC. And now, the Silver Beaver awards go to:

Larry Andrews

Laurie Bott

Mike Sabeh

James Durdak

David Galletti

Dale McFarland, Jr.

and Ed Mozdzen

If you know of these folks, send them a congratulatory text, email, or call. Or shout them out on Facebook when you get the chance. To all the recipients, know the Scouting movement is better for your time and effort.

Next week, we will announce the Lake Erie Council Unit Scouter Award recipients. And in the following weeks, we wish to continue recognizing great achievements, big and small, at the unit level. Had a patrol successfully use the patrol method at a Klondike for the first time ever? Let's give 'em a shoutout! Had a den leader go above and beyond the call of duty to make their den the best it can be? Let us know! Simply email me at jacob.brown@scouting.org with who we are recognizing and why. Applicable pictures or videos are also welcome! Let's share our wins together, Lake Erie Council! And who knows, maybe sometime soon, these folks will make it to Silver Beaver status?

And that's a wrap this week: thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We'll see ya next time!

LEC 3 Minute Update – January 6, 2022

...be forgot, and days of auld lang syne! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hello, Lake Erie Council, I'm Jake Brown, and I gotta tell ya: it feels fantastic to say goodbye to 2021! It was real, it was fun, and it's done. We hope you had a great time over the holiday spent with family and friends, and we welcome you back to what I hope is your favorite part of your week in Scouting: the 3-minute update. Here's what's up: roundtable, Firelands Scout Shop sales, RSO training, summer camp staff applications, Klondikes, a note from our Development department, the WB/NYLT Scholarship Breakfast, the this week's pro tip, and this week's fun fact.

But first, a quick shoutout to my colleague Matt Feehley who delivered Toyota Rav4's-worth of popcorn to the Northeast Ohio USO headquarters in Youngstown, Ohio! We salute the men and women of the armed forces everywhere who defend our nation, and we hope that those who will spend any time at the USO over the next few months will enjoy some of our delicious Scout's Own popcorn!

The weather is finally getting colder, and that means it's a great time to go camping at one of our premier camps! Check out the council calendar with all the most up-to-date Klondike information there is! Send questions to Anthony.Dworning@scouting.org.

Range Safety Officer Training is upcoming at Beaumont Scout Reservation on February 19th. See the calendar for details, and contact Julia.Hearne@scouting.org with any questions you have.

Early Bird registration ends on February 6th for the annual Wood Badge and NYLT Scholarship breakfast. Please attend if you have participated in either course in the past, or have family members attending this year's course offerings! Send questions to Linda.Gray@scouting.org.

The Firelands Scout Store and Trading Post has some swingin' deals on Christmas Scouting decorations and holiday Wood Badge themed cards. Stop in and see the ladies to get the scoop, and to say hello!

Need a job this summer? We got you covered! Change the lives of thousands of Scouts for the better at Beaumont Scout Reservation's resident camp. Contact Anthony.Dworning@scouting.org with questions. Apply today!

Roundtable is full-steam ahead! Be sure to attend one of our in-person sessions, or tune in virtually. Dates and details are on the Council calendar.

And now, a note from Bill Roloff, our Sportsman Adventures director: "In addition to some of our old favorite experiences, we promise some new, exciting, and lively adventures from our Development Department in 2022. Stay tuned, and we hope you'll join us this year for some great fun, and great support of Scouting!"

 Thanks Bill!

Here's this week's pro tip, straight from the desk of Heather McMillan:

So you've got an Eagle Scout who has completed their Board of Review. That's it, they're now done and considered Eagles, right? Not so fast. The system won't recognize them as such until we receive the Eagle Scout application. This can be dropped off, or mailed to our office at PO Box 93388, Cleveland, OH, 44101.

And lastly, here's this week's fun fact: what happened after an iPhone and a firework were arrested on New Year's Eve? One was charged, but the other was let off!

Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you, folks! See ya next week!

Nathan Shoaff NYLT Memorial

The Boy Scouts of America had a major impact on the life of Nathan Shoaff, a Strongsville resident who died December 13, 2021, due to health complications from Covid. He loved camping, the outdoors, and providing cheerful service to his fellow Scouts and community. Nathan was the son of Linda and Matt Shoaff, and older brother of Abbey. He was a 2014 graduate of Strongsville High School and Polaris Career Center.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a weeklong premier leadership development course, teaching Scouts skills such as situational leadership styles, managing change, conflict resolution, and the stages of team development. Nathan was selected to attend NYLT as a participant and continued to volunteer as course staff for four years.

Nathan is remembered as a gentle young man who loved Scouting and serving others. He was quick to smile and always ready to help.

In honor of Nathan, his family has requested that any contributions be donated to this Memorial Fund in his memory.  The proceeds of this fund will help other Scouts have the opportunity to become future leaders through the NYLT Program.

You can make a donation in honor of Nathan at the link below.

LEC 3 Minute Update – December 16, 2021

3 Minute Update

Hello,

And this is the last 3-minute update of 2021! Oh my goodness, what a year it has been! From everyone here at the Lake Erie Council, I just want to thank you for your efforts in keeping this movement moving. We do have a few things to cover before the year is out, and here we go!

The Council office will be closed from 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 22nd, thru 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 3rd. The only way to get in touch with any Council support during this time is through lecmembercare@scouting.org. There will be minimal attention paid to that email during this time, so please only reach out if it is urgent.

I know many of you have opened and begun your recharters, but not as many have submitted them yet. Please get in touch with me if you have any questions about your charter, and validate and pay for it once you are ready. Do this before December 22nd, so we can all be done with charter!

It’s almost January, and that means it’s almost time for a Klondike Bar….er, wait, that’s not right! A klondike campout is more like it! (Although ice cream does sound delicious.) Check out the council calendar for the latest info on Klondikes this winter.

The days are about to get longer instead of shorter, and that means its almost time for summer again! Don’t delay: get yourself a hot gig and a swingin’ deal: get paid to work at camp! Applications are open, contact Anthony Dworning with questions.

The annual Wood Badge and NYLT scholarship breakfast is upcoming on March 12th at Lakewood High School. Contact Linda with questions!

And with that, I leave you with the last fun fact for this year: what’s the difference between the Christmas alphabet and the normal alphabet? The Christmas alphabet has no-el! Ah, I didn’t find Santa, but man is that a good one!

Folks, take care! It was great keeping you up to date! I’ll see you next year! Toasted burrito!
