LEC 3 Minute Update – August 11, 2021

Mornin’ all! Here’s the three minute update, brought to you from Disney Land.

 

Today, we’ve got a couple things to update you on: there’s a state of Scouting address, and new membership resources.

Hopefully you received an email directly from Marc Ryan, our scout executive, regarding the state of scouting address being held on August 17th,  from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the Lakewood Civic Auditorium.

This informative gathering is meant for all adults who care about Scouting, especially parents and leaders at the unit level.

Council leadership will be sharing information surrounding the national reorganization, the “global” settlement and Lake Erie Council’s portion, the status of membership nationally and locally, as well as some needed adjustments and additions we have made to the council staff and operations to address these trends. Make no mistake, this meeting is not about the demise of Scouting. On the contrary, the goal is to empower each participant and lay out how each of us will play a critical role in the creating the new future of Scouting.

Registration is required, please do so here. Also, due to the state of COVID, we will be requiring masks and hand sanitization upon arrival. Field uniforms are welcome, not mandatory.

Lastly, this event will not be live-streamed or recorded due to the nature of some of the topics. That said, there will be follow-up communications and resources thereafter, so watch out for those.

LEC 3 Minute Update – August 3, 2021

Good afternoon Lake Erie Council! And greetings from Ol’ Faithful at Yellowstone National Park. I wish I was on vacation here, but instead I get to update you on some new changes here at the Lake Erie Council! 

This is pretty easy to follow. 

The Service and Growth Team has been split in two divisions: Unit Growth and Unit Service.

Jim Vanderpool is heading up the Unit Growth Team with Matt Feehley and Julia Hearne also work. Their primary goal will to be focusing on membership growth. Make sure to reach out to them this fall for your recruitment needs.

Michelle Cali is now in charge of unit service, where I am moving also! Our primary goal is to provide service to units for projects like recharter, and other commissioner-related functions. We also work to support the Growth and Outreach teams.

Jason Setser is in charge of the Unit Outreach Team with Darnell Davis, and their primary goal is creating new units. These guys are in the same position, nothing new here and they will be working closely with Jim and team on growth.

Member Care remains the same: if you have any technical or unit questions (about registration fees, or scoutbook/my.scouting concerns), contact member care team.

The Outdoor Experiences team, still headed by Phil Williams, now includes Anthony Dworning who is moving off of the communications team. He is the new Beaumont Scout Reservation Camp Director, and in charge of all Scouting programs at Beaumont including Scouts BSA resident camp and Klondikes.

Phil Williams will still lead the Experiences team but will be focusing his role on Great Lakes Adventure, Capital projects, building outside partnerships with schools and groups. He also will take over as the lead for Wood Badge.

Also new as a professional to that team is Grace Prorok. She has served on camp staff for several summers including as program director the last two years. She will be joining the professional staff as a support to the Great Lakes Adventure program, Cub Haunted, and summer camp. She will still serve as the program director and will lead several events independently such as Sap camp through out the year. 

Noah Boksansky remains in charge of event registrations, and is picking up the torch to work on Merit Badge Programming. Noah will also be the primary contact for all things mobile rock wall related.

Brittany Dunne remains a stalwart in the department: a force of pleasant charm, she continues to deliver cub Scout programming to the masses.

The Development team and the Member care team remain unchanged. The communications team, headed by Anastasia Duller and supported by Gina Zuccolotto, will be adding the popcorn for the 2021 season. Heather McMillan continues to support the efforts of the popcorn.

Lastly, here’s a reminder that we have five mobile rock wall trainings scheduled for folks during the evening in August. Odds are very, very high that if you want your Pack to have the rock wall present at it’s join night, someone from the Pack will have to facilitate its use. LEC 3 Minute Update – July 7, 2021

Greetings from Beaumont Scout Reservation! It’s hot folks. How hot is it? I saw cooking merit badge frying steaks on the boat dock, that’s how hot it is.

I mean its so hot, I’m going to keep this update within 3 minutes, that’s how hot it is!

So today, we’ve got the following updates: the faith-in-scouting program, upcoming events, Firelands Trading Post updates, Cleveland Scout Shop updates, a note to merit badge counselors, and a recruitment update.

First, there’s a faith-in-scouting open house happening on July 29th, from 11 to 2, out here at Beaumont. If you represent (or are close with) a religious organization who hosts or is hosting a Scouting program, you’re invited! Lunch is provided, please contact Jason Setser for details and to RSVP, his email is below.

So, folks, there are too many upcoming events to list out in this update: but please know there’s still time to register for Woodbadge, Family Camping at Beaumont, the 75th camporall, the silver screen overnighter, and the cybersecurity boot camp! It may be hot, and I may be tired, but I know the best time to welcome new scouts into the movement is right now. If you’re wondering what you can do to help the BSA right now, the answer is simple: empower everyone you know to speak about all of the amazing, positive things that have happened in their lives as a result of Scouting. Had fun at camp? Spread the word. Watched a Scout conquer their fear of heights? Spread the word! Witnessed teamwork at a pinewood derby? Spread the word! Seen you leadership skills increase ten-fold? Spread the word! There’s a lot to be proud of in Scouting within your world: make sure you can attest to that, and welcome other families with open arms.

Other festivities will be available, and everyone will be able to compete for points in the Erielhonan Olympics. Will you be a medalist? You know, when we talk about recruitment, I think it’s important to discuss this. We as a movement have weathered bankruptcy, and covid at a national level, let alone our Council’s restructuring and other unit-based challenges. Our membership has shrunk a lot, it’s true. But we’re still here. We’re still getting ready for popcorn sales and campouts and recruitment drives. We do it because while all of us are here today, we won’t be forever. And because the positive impact of our movement deserves to reach as many youth as possible.

When you go out into the community supporting Scouting, the public may try to ask you about questions you don’t have the answers to. We, the Council, are here to help with that. But you are the expert of Scouting as it pertains to your unit, and your community. Do be prepared to talk about that. Be prepared to share how all your leaders have taken Youth Protection Training, and how all of the adults follow these guidelines to keep your Scouts safe. Be prepared to share how Scouting has affected the lives of your kids, bringing them out of their shells, building their confidence, teaching them teamwork. Be prepared to speak about how no Scout is left behind thanks to the budgeting process, using fundraisers throughout the year to guarantee opportunities to everyone in the Pack.

LEC 3 Minute Update – June 23, 2021

Mornin', welcome to the 3-minute update! This one's coming to you a little later than normal, and we can chalk that up to the time of year: construction. FYI, if you're coming to Beaumont from I-90, you'll want to disregard the posted detour and instead, turn left onto Route 307, right onto Forman Rd., follow that down yonder to Eagleville-Jefferson Rd. (the intersection isn't marked, but if you turn correctly you'll see the Country Baptist Church to your right), then turn left back onto Route 45. Got it? Excellent! Believe me folks, its quicker than the posted detour, I timed it both ways!

LEC 3 Minute Update – June 16, 2021

Mornin’, all! And welcome to our 3-minute Update on-location shoot today at Firelands Scout Reservation. Behind me are Scouts participating and staffing the 2021 NYLT course. When I asked the Scouts how their day was going, all 91 screamed “If You Can See it, You Can Be it!” Then I picked myself up off the ground, wiped the blood out of my ear, and thanked them for the update. That’s how things are going here, and let’s give you an update on the rest of the Scouting world:

We’ve got an update on advancement, beascout.org, the 75th Camporall, popcorn, Scout’s Own, the Eagle Scout dinner, and today’s fun fact.

Let’s start with advancement: this is a friendly reminder that all Cub Scouts are now working their next rank up. Any rank or elective advancements should get logged into Scoutbook now, and work on their next rank begins. Questions about Scoutbook or advancement should go to Member Care.

Next, let’s talk about beascout.org. If you know what that is, that’s a good thing! Remember, there are leads that come through from the outside, so you need to check your beascout pins regularly. Also remember to update them! If you don’t know I’m talking about, email member care right now asking “What is a beascout pin?” It’ll be the best 3 minute call for growing your pack ever!

Regarding the 75th Camporall, you need to know 2 things: 1, it’s going to rock your socks off! There will be good music, a midway with unique Scouting demonstrations, and FIREWORKS! Campsite sponsorships are available for units to commemorate their campsites with a unique sign, and you can also purchase a memorial brick for this event, which will be placed around the future, updated flag plaza in front of the Augustus Training Center. LEC 3 Minute Update – June 9, 2021

Mornin’, all! And this is your 3-minute update from Jamaica! Today’s update is pretty easy, and we’ll be able to do it in one take this time! We’ve got an update on Family Camps, Beaumont’s 75th Camporall, this year’s popcorn sale, Scout’s Own, and an update from the Scout store.

Don’t forget folks, it isn’t too late to register for Family Camping Weekends across the council this summer! For just $15/person, you get to camp with your family and/or friends, get to swim and play with slingshots, earn Tribe of Achoowuh orders, and enjoy a peaceful, easy weekend in your favorite camp!

Adventure Day Camp for cubs is also available for those looking for a day camp experience at Beaumont Scout Reservation. This year’s theme is Magic Treehouse. And have you seen the patches? Yeah, these! Commemorative re-production patches from the golden days of yore will be available for sale, starting at Resident Camp, and continuing at the 75th Camporall.
