LEC 3 Minute Update - July 21, 2022

Greetings! So, last week we had a technical glitch that prevented us from sharing the 3 minute update via email. So this week it’s a 6-minute update! Let’s take a look at some old news…

Folks, even though that was supposed to go out last week, I hope you still took all that news to heart! A couple things to add for this week are…

This week’s shout-out, this week’s pro tip, and a note about special hours at the Firelands store this week:

As we enter the final week of summer camp for Beaumont, the Ranger Staff would like to thank all of the Troops that completed service projects at camp this summer. The place looks and works even better now, thanks to your efforts!

Don’t forget about Rocket Day on August 13th, along with the Captains and Crushers Overnighters! Email Jim Vanderpool with any questions!

The Firelands Trading Post has special hours this week, in order to best accommodate the massive number of Cub Scouts attending camp this weekend! On Thursday, they’re open from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday will be 9:00 to 9:00, Saturday will be 9:30 to 7:00, and Sunday they’ll be open from 9:30 until Noon. Stop in and get a slushie, a hoodie, and all sorts of other goodies!

Do you not know who your unit’s popcorn kernel or fundraising chair is going to be yet? Well do that person a favor and register them….., er, no, I read that wrong, have them register the Unit for the upcoming fall sale! There’s a lot of important updates being sent to units by Trails’ End, and you won’t receive this information if your unit is not registered. The point of contact can always change later! Register now at this link.

And lastly, here’s a great big fun announcement to make! The Lake Erie Council is proud to present G.A.M.E.S. Training on November 12th at Lake Erie College. For those of you that know a thing about Scouting because you’ve seen a thing or two about Scouting, consider this to be the latest rendition of a University of Scouting or Baden Powell Institute-type of event. For those of you, like me, who never had to crank a car starter, this training is an all day opportunity to learn a lot more about Scoutings’ myriad of topics, from getting more information about what a den is, to learning about leave no trace principles, to cooking in the great outdoors, and even taking time to rethink how to be as focused on diversity and inclusion as you can at the unit level: this training will definitely have something in it for you! The best part is that each training will have a game-theme to it, meaning this won’t be a death-by-powerpoint day! No ma’am! This will be an interactive day of fun for adult Scouters to learn new skills while having a blast! There will also be a midway of information to learn from between sessions and during lunch! $25 adult participant fees will include program supplies, learning materials, and lunch, and $5 extra will cover babysitting for your future Scout. Why are there periods between the letters in G.A.M.E.S.? Because on that day, we will be Getting Adults More Expertise in Scouting! Man, I’m having fun just talking about this! Questions should go to event chair Sarah Williamson.

And that’s a wrap for these week’s 3 minute updates. Thanks for alls you dos, and thanks for beings yous. Until next time!

LEC 3 Minute Update – April 14, 2022

This week we have: Ukraine Medical Kits, Scout Shop Updates, Volunteer Opportunities, Merit Badge Counselor Renewal, and National Training Opportunities, and this week’s good news shoutout.

But first, we’d like to recognize Troop 427 and Pack 3429 from Amherst for sending in medical kits, which will be shipped to Ukraine and delivered to the front lines for military and civilians to use. Our collection box at the office still has plenty of space, however, and anyone else is able to put together these kits. Please email me at Jacob.brown@scouting.org for more information.

In honor of national Park week, the Cleveland Scout Shop has 20% off select gear now through April 23rd. Stop in today and save!

Also, make sure to like and follow both the Cleveland Scout Shop and the Firelands Trading Post and Scout Store on Facebook.

Calling any Wood Badge trained Scouters: have you ever wondered what the next step is for training? The answer is: the National Leadership Challenge. It’s offered at the Summit and at Philmont this summer and fall, and puts all the skills you’ve acquired in Scouting to practice, to sharpen your tools Scouting.

CJ Nusbaum has more information: email him at cj@troop176.org with questions.

Watch your email on Monday for instructions about how to print Charter Certificates, Membership Cards, and Unit Rosters!

Attention all Merit Badge Counselors: the annual renewal process is begun! Watch your emails that will confirm your merit badge counselor information. Any questions about the process should be emailed to Gary Jarkewicz (ggjark@live.com).

Are you looking for a great opportunity to join other Scouts in Trash the Trash Day? Well, have we got a swingin’ deal for you! The annual Cuyahoga RIverSweep will be Saturday, May 7th, from 9-11am. Follow this link to register and attend in various spots along the river.

And lastly, congratulations to Steve Ott for his induction into the Lakewood High School Hall of Fame. His countless hours of service to the community, including to Scouting, is the reason for his nomination and confirmation. Thank you, Steve, for leaving places a little better than you found them, and congratulations!

And that’s a wrap for this week’s 3 minute update! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We’ll see you next week!

LEC 3 Minute Update – April 7, 2022

Mornin', all! I'm Jake Brown, coming to you from beautiful Madison, OH! It's a beautiful day in this beautiful place, and we've got a great 3 minute update for you this week.

There's ILST Updates, Member Care Updates, Scout Shop Updates, OA updates, Den Chief Training, the Silver Screen Overnighter, the calendar, and,   ugh,    another trip to..... The FuTuRe.

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops is a training every NYLT participant should receive in their Troop. However, there's an opportunity to fill this pre-requisite by attending the Council-offered course on May 21st. 29 slots remain, contact Dave Sechnick (<dave.sechnick@gmail.com>) with questions.

Den Chief Training will be offered in-person on May 7th at Clague Road Church in North Olmstead. Cost is $5, contact Julia.Hearne@scouting.org with questions.

The Silver Screen Overnighter is April 15th-16th in Elyria. Contact Jim.Vanderpool@scouting.org with questions.

From the OA: Spring Induction weekend is at the tail end of April. It's the first chance for new OA candidates to complete their ordeal, and it's the last call for candidates from 2020 to complete theirs. Contact Sean Fahnestock (spfahnestock@gmail.com) with questions.

Is your rainy day fund running low? That's ok, the Cleveland Scout Shop has some swingin' deals on select rain gear from now thru March 26th. Stop in today for these 25% savings!

The Firelands Scout Shop will be closed Friday and Saturday of Easter weekend. They will re-open on Monday, April 18th, from 3-7pm.

Spring is in the air, so it's time to get bee-zy with outdoor Scouting adventures! 18 units are signed up for trash the trash day, but no one else has sent in further info on their Earth Day Hikes, BSA Swim Days, or Free Fishing Weekend plans. Send those into us so you can use our pre-made social media posts, car magnets, flyers, and many more spring recruitment assets. Contact Jim.Vanderpool@scouting.org with your plans or questions about recruitment today.

Lastly, the council calendar is online and as fully up to date as we can get it! Shoutout to Anthony Dworning and Noah Boksansky for helping with this behemoth endeavor. If you see something that needs corrected, please reach out to Phil.Williams@scouting.org.

And now, we go back to that scary place with the ugly humanoid, THE FUTURE.

"I am Jakebot. I can take calls, answer emails, and require fewer fast food stops to function when I am in the field than human Jake. Now, in these modern times of 2023, you should know April is the month of training. There is Rangemaster Training, BALOO Training, SM Basic Training, a BIG Training Summit, and Wilderness First Aid Training this whole month.

In May, there will be Spring Camporees and a Tough Cubber.

Now time for a hilarious joke: How do you get Jake Brown to stop talking? You can't. He is human and does not have the be quiet switch like Jake bot does. Ha ha. Ha ha. Ha. Ha.

Remember folks, the future is something you either envision and build, or its something you enter with fear. The choice is yours.

And that's a wrap for this week's three minute update. Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! I'll see you next week.

LEC 3 Minute Update – March 31, 2022

Mornin’ all! Welcome to this week’s three minute update: I’m Jake Brown.

This week we have: camperships, Eagle Scout Scholarships, Spring Recruitment Drive Updates, this week’s recognition shoutout, Camp Early Bird Payments, and a new segment called: The Future!

First payments for Scouts attending summer camp are due tomorrow, April 1st. These payments lock-in the Early bird rates for anyone attending. There will be no Early Bird extensions. Contact Noah.Boksansky@scouting.org with questions.

Camperships for Resident Camp and S’more Cub Scout Adventures are due April 5th. That’s right folks: April 5th. If you could use some financial assistance in attending these events, you should apply for them by April 5th. There are also camperships for NYLT, due April 15th, and Wood Badge, due June 1st. Contact Noah.Boksansky@scouting.org with questions, and go to lecbsa.org/camperships to apply.

Speaking of financial aid, any Eagle Scouts from the Class of 2021 have until April 22nd to submit scholarship applications to the Council office. There are 3 local Eagle Scout Scholarships, so apply today! Go to lecbsa.org/eagle-scout to apply, and contact Heather.McMillan@scouting.org with any questions.

Spring is in the air! And that means it’s time to get Bee-zy with adventure! Shout-out to Packs 28, 68, 102, and 677 for getting back with Michelle with their Spring plans to participate in the Earth Day Weekend hike, Trash the Trash Day, Scout Swim Day, and Free Fishing Weekend. We have car magnets, social media assets, and flyers that are designed to help direct eye traffic to these’ packs activities. It’s not too late for Packs, Troops, or Crews to hop on this bandwagon! Email Michelle.Cali@scouting.org your plans for Spring recruitment so we can share them on our public-facing website, lakeeriescouting.org!

Our recognition moment goes to two places this week: first, our Council Commissioner Steve Garner was published last week in Bryan on Scouting’s blog for having earned the National Venturing Leadership Award for 2022. Congratulations Steve!

Also, Eagle Scout Samuel Al-Hawaz from Troop 293 represented the Lake Erie Council at the Ohio Statehouse yesterday, along with seven other Eagle Scouts from Ohio, for the traditional Report to State. They met with Secretary of State Frank LaRose, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and Speaker of the House Robert Cupp. Sam had the opportunity to tell all three about his Eagle project, which beautified God’s Acre Cemetery. Congratulations Samuel, thanks for representing us well!

Finally, our last segment takes us where only sages and psychics could go before. Now join us as we go: TO THE FUTURE!

(Zap to future)

Morning all. I am Jake Bot. Welcome to April 2023. You should know that Wilderness First Aid is at Beaumont April 1st, as well as Rangemaster Training. There will be a Cub Fun Day at Firelands on April 15th, and SM Basic Training. Beaumont has a Merit Badge University. BALOO is April 22nd. And April 29th, there will be a Beaumont Camporee and Webelos event.

Now for the fun fact. What is the difference between Jake and Jake Bot. Jake Bot is funnier. Ha ha. Ha Ha.

(Zap to present)

Wow, that’s dystopian! Well while I go beef up my resume, you can find the 18-month Council calendar updated on the Lake Erie Council website starting next Wednesday. Expect an email with sub-divided calendars to be sent shortly after, focusing on Cub, Troop, or Venturing events that match your registration. Any questions can go to Noah.Boksansky@scouting.org

And that’s a wrap! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! I’m Jake Brown, and I’ll be here next week, at least – keep that Jake Bot from taking my job. This is terrifying, why does the future always suck?.

LEC 3 Minute Update – March 24, 2022

Hello, and thanks for tuning in to this week's three minute update, from beautiful Punderson State Park in Geauga County! I'm Jake Brown, and this week we have:

Spring Recruitment Drive Updates, this week's pro tip, camp staff, summer camp payments, and our good news shoutout.

But first: we, the Scouts of Northeast Ohio, have been asked to help create and package medical kits to be sent to Ukraine. These portable first aid kits will help people in the front lines respond to first aid emergencies. For questions about how to get involved, or to request more information about how to create these kits, please contact me at jacob.brown@scouting.org.

Moving into the fun of Scouting, have some fun this summer at camp while making some cheddar! We still need an Ecology Director, ATV Director, Archery Director, and STEM Director at camp this summer. Apply today! Contact Anthony.Dworning@scouting.org with questions.

Also, everyone coming to summer camp at Beaumont needs to have your Early Bird payment submitted by next Friday, April 1st. That's right: your first payment, which will secure your Early Bird discount, is due next Friday. Contact Noah.Boksansky@scouting.org with any questions.

A friendly reminder to all units: make a plan for your Earth Day weekend hike, Trash the Trash Day, BSA Swim Day, and Ohio Free Fishing weekend. Share your plans with Michelle.Cali@scouting.org so we can update our public-facing New Member website, lakeeriescouting.org. Send Michelle any questions you have, and make sure to invite as many folks as you can to these fun, local events! Resources for leaders to advertise these events are at lecbsa.org/membership-resources.

And now, this week's pro tip: update your Unit Pin to reflect your unit's most up-to-date meeting and contact information! Do so by logging in to my.scouting.org, going to organization manager in the menu, select your unit, select unit pin, and update the information accordingly. Any questions should go to lecmembercare@scouting.org.

Finally, this week's good news shout out goes to the den leaders of Pack 3236 in Berlin Heights, who have enthusiasm for the program and put together meaningful and exciting den meetings every week. Brooke, Robert, Kevin, Carrie, Rollie, Nikki, Becky, Kent, Devon, Nick, Robert, and Phil: you guys do an amazing job, and on behalf of the Lake Erie Council, we thank you for the work that goes in to delivering a great program!

And that's a wrap: thanks for all you do and thanks for being you! We'll see you next time.

LEC 3 Minute Update – March 17, 2022

Top of the mornin' to you this beautiful St. Patrick's Day! We're filming from the Cliffs of Mohr, and they are amazing to look over. I'm Jake Brown, and this is your 3 minute update!

This week we have:

Scout Shop Sales, Spring Recruitment Drive Updates, the Religious Relationships Committee, this week's pro tip (Unit Money Earning Application), this week's fun fact,

The Religious Relationships Committee is being formed to help further the presence of The highest power in the lives of Scouts, and their relationship to said Highest Power. This is open to folks practicing any faith who represent a certain body of faith. Contact Jason.Setser@scouting.org with any questions or to join.

The Cleveland Scout Shop has 25% off select camping gear thru March 26th: stop in today!

Don't forget about BALOO, SM Basic, Rangemaster, Or Archery Level 1 Trainings happening in April. Register today, check the council calendar for details.

And also don't forget about the Trailblazer, Tough Cubber, and S'More Cub Scout Adventures happening for Cub Scouts from May through July. It's the best time to get outside and make the most of what activities Scouting has to offer, so check out the Council calendar and register today!

This Spring is a bee-autiful time to get bee-zy with adventure! Scouts will swarm the great outdoors all over Northeast Ohio, and this is a great opportunity to invite new folks to join your Units!

Here's what's up: in April, we're encouraging all Scouting units to go hiking on Earth Day Weekend. In May, every unit can participate in Scouts Trash the Trash Day anywhere, and they can register to do so at this link. Also, there's Scout Swim Days at your local YMCA's on May 14th. (List Y's). Finally, in June, Ohio has Free Fishing Weekend for everyone, no licenses required. And any Scouting Unit can organize an outing accordingly!

So, here's the deal: we need every Pack, Troop, and Crew to participate in these Spring time activities. And we need you to tell us where you're going to do these activities, and at what time. We, in turn, will provide sample pictures and captions for social media posts: those can be found in our unit leader portal for membership, lecbsa.org/membership-resources.

We will also fully update our new-family oriented website, lecscouting.org, to reflect your unit's plans. That way, interested families can all go to lecscouting.org, find your unit's information, and get in touch with you if they have any questions. It's genius! To recap this: make a plan to participate in these springtime activities, share the plan with us, and promote your plan using lecscouting.org! We know that Packs 3208, 3236, 3303, 28, 988, 677, 3072, and 3075, as well as Troops 207, 223, and 71G are already participating in Trash the Trash. Great job folks! But we still don't know where or when you're meeting, and that's why you need to email that info over to Michelle.Cali@scouting.org so we can update our website for you! It's a lot easier than catching bees, I promise!

And that's a wrap for this week's 3 minute update! Thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We'll see you next time!

Now for this week's pro tip: if you're going to drive to our Cleveland office, you'll go to 2241 Woodland Ave. If you're going to mail us something to that address, it'll make it as close as across the street to the Orange Avenue USPS mail processing facility, before it gets sent back to you. So please mail things to our mailing address (sing the jingle) PO Box 93388, Cleveland Ohio, 44101. Again that's (sing the jingle) PO Box 93388, Cleveland Ohio 44101.

Now its time for this week's fun fact: Why was the honeybee flying too fast and with his legs crossed? Because he had to go to the BP station really bad!

Oh, haha, ah I love that one! Say, speakign of bees, it's time to get bee-zy with adventure this Spring! That's right, Spring is a great time to start getting outside, getting more physically active in Scouting, and being more present out and about in your community. And to help with that, we've got some initiatives you should put on your Scouting calendar:

In April, end your hive-ernation with a hike on Earth Day Weekend! In May, join the worldwide movement of Scouts for trash-the-trash day on May 7th. You can register here! You can also get in touch with your local YMCA for Scout Swim Day on May 14th. Locations are confirmed at Lakewood, Ashtabula, Hillcrest, French Creek, Geauga, West Park, and North Royalton, with more to come! Lastly, June 18th and 19th are free fishing days in Ohio: that means no one needs a fishing license to go fishing as a family in public fishing holes!

So make plans, spread the word, and invite as many friends as you have to join your Scouting adventures with these BEE-autiful outdoor outing opportunities.

And that's a wrap for this week's three minute update! Thanks for all you do and thanks for being you, we'll see ya next time!

Now time for this week's fun fact: what's the best vehicle for watching movies? ATV!

Oh, I love that one! And speaking of ATV's, this is for all ATV enthusiasts 21 years of age or older: YOU can change lives this summer by showing Scouts and Scouters the safe, appropriate way to run ATV’s at Beaumont Scout Reservation. In fact, you can get paid to ride these week after week? Serious inquiries should go to Anthony.Dworning@scouting.org.

Roundtable continues next week in Berea and Firelands, and is followed up with the Mayfield and virtual options next week! Check the council calendar for details.

Were you scrolling facebook just before this update? To be clear, please don’t tell me what you were scrolling through. And for the Cubs: there's a Webelos Spring Challenge at Beaumont happening simultaneously with the Camporee (and that's a great recruitment tool for Troops, just sayin'.)

LEC 3 Minute Update – February 24, 2022,

Mornin', all! This is Jake Brown with the 3 minute update, and I'm not going to lie, this one's a little dense, folks, so be prepared.

While I'm physically being filmed at our office in Cleveland, my heart, as with everyone else, I assume, is in Ukraine this morning. More to come on that in just a moment, but let's now focus now on everything you need to know this week:

In order to run a BB or archery range, including the inflatable ranges we have available to rent from the Council, someone from your unit must be Rangemaster certified. There will be a training for Rangemaster and Archery level 1 training at Beaumont on April 2nd. Register online, and contact Julia. Hearne@scouting.org with any questions.

Training is a key component of successful delivery of the Scouting program. Should you have any questions about leader position specific training, how to get trained in your position, or who to contact about scheduling training for your position, please contact Michelle.Cali@scouting.org.

For outdoor, overnight outings in Cub Scouts, BALOO is a required training! And SM Basic Training is required at the troop level. The first of 3 rounds of those trainings offered this year are coming up in April: check the calendar and contact Rebecca Setty for BALOO questions (rebecca.setty@gmail.com) and Pat O'Leary with SM Basic questions (phobsa@att.net).

For youth leaders in the SBSA program, training in their positions is delivered in ILST. At this time, there is one ILST training session on the calendar, although we hope the interest is there to provide more! In any case, that training for youth will be held at Beaumont on May 21st. Register online! Contact Dave Sechnick (davesechnick@aol.com) with any questions. Please note ILST is a pre-requisite to attend NYLT.

Speaking of, NYLT is a premiere youth leadership training offered by Scouting for youth members in the SBSA program. This training will be held at Firelands June 12-17. Register online, and contact John Z (johnz3@zfolks.com) if you have any questions.

Following up with that, Wood Badge is the NYLT equivalent for adult leaders. Wood Badge is an opportunity to learn a little more about how to see your vision through to reality in Scouting and beyond, be it having more organization as a Troop, a more engaging program for your Pack, or a succession plan you can count on. Just a few examples of things Wood Badge can help you achieve. The course is at Firelands from July 29-31, and August 13-14. Register online and contact Joel Bussman (joelbussman@gmail.com) with questions.

Moving from training into just plain fun, there are some dates you should know about: April 22-24 is the Beaumont Spring Camporee. Webelos are welcome to join that Saturday and Sunday as well for the Webelos Spring Challenge. Contact Anthony.Dworning@scouting.org for more info, and sign up today!

The Firelands Spring Camporee is May 13-15th.

And save the date for Cub Scout Summer Camping at Firelands this summer. Contact Jess Weaver (jlweaver1998@gmail.com) for more information about Cub Scout Summer Camping. More info to come on that!

Lastly, a friendly reminder that first payments for SBSA Summer Camp is arriving on April 1st: That's $100 for patrol cooking and $150 for dining hall food. Get those in to Noah.Boksansky@scouting.org as soon as you can before April 1st.

Finally, I want to leave you with the following message, paraphrased and translated from the website of the National Organization of Scouting in Ukraine:

"In these difficult times, we are reminded of the Scout values and principles of our Movement. Everything that is happening now is a difficult challenge, but each of us must accept it according to the Scout Law.

Be prudent, critical of information, and do not succumb to provocations. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Do not panic, and do not panic others. Do not incite hate speech on social media. Maintain devotion to Scout values, and remember that a Scout is friendly to all other Scouts. Remember that every Scout is a messenger of Peace, and remember the Ukrainian Scout Slogan: "Always be ready!"

And for all those who feel a certain despair, we would like to remind you of one simple truth from the founder of Scouting: "Dawn comes after the darkest moment of the night." We believe the current events are the same moment before dawn!"

If anyone watching this interested in offering their support to our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in Scouting, please email Michelle.Cali@scouting.org or Jacob.Brown@scouting.org, and we will do our best to coordinate communications and keep you abreast of any needs they may share as time continues.

That's a wrap for this week: thanks for all you do, and thanks for being you! We'll see you next week.
